Hunting Grounds Version 1 by Aoden

Hunting Grounds Version 1 by Aoden:

Preface

This volume is intended as a complete technical price guide of the various bestial hunting grounds available to an Iridinian hunter. This guide has been compiled with flawless cuts sold by a respected and skilled broker at the most generous carcass buyer. With those factors in mind, personal experience may vary. Of specific note, the heads of all beasts require careful handling and are worth significantly less when skinned by any other than a true master. Also of note, many animals manage to collect precious stones in their stomachs. These will not be noted in the listings. Rats, spiders, hounds, and other small vermin are the
common suspects.

This volume will be structured so that each page will detail a hunting grounds. In cases where different areas of the same locale provide different experiences, additional pages will detail the additional areas. Each page will provide a brief description of the area, detailed directions for reaching the area, subjective rankings for the difficulty and profitability of the area, and a complete chart of animals and their skinnable parts. Each part will have the count, weight, and price of an ideal cut detailed. Each animal will have a price
and weight total for what I, personally, think is worth skinning. A star will be placed next to each part included in those totals. Personal preference may vary.

The difficulty and profitability of each area is entirely subjective and based on various factors. The difficulty will include danger; an area with leech spiders that perpetually drown you in web will be ranked higher, despite those critters being killed by a few light taps of an inexperienced hunter. Profitability takes into account critter density, proximity to good part buyers, and the amount of effort required. A good hunter will take those rankings, and this guide as a whole, as a reference and determine what they are most comfortable with.

Signal Tower Island

Commonly referred to as "the Island", this area is a good choice for the first
area any new fighter should visit. Small and weak vermin wander the large island
and rarely swarm. A skilled combatant will kill these vermin very quickly.

The Island can be reached by starting outside the Stone Toga, stepping two paces
north, three paces west, and then onto the northwest ramp. Once there, wait for
and board a ferry that continuously shuttles back and forth to the island. Adult
fluviturs can be found on the ship grounded on the northwest side.

Riverside Sewers - Entrance

The sewers can be divided into three areas, which are roamed by different
beasts. The entrance of the sewers is the natural progression from the Island,
with small vermin for an unskilled combatant to fight. The southern branch is
of similar difficulty. The southeastern branch, however, has large wasps,
alligators, and spiders that are more dangerous.

The sewers can be entered by starting outside the Stone Toga, stepping a pace
east, entering the northern door, stepping another pace east, and then climbing
the ladder all the way down.

Note: Entering the sewers will leave you covered in filth and smelling horribly.
There is a barrel of clean water and a brush above the ladder. You can scrub
yourself down with the brush to remove the odor.

Iridine City Dumps

The city dumps, located just outside the walls, is the final home of much of
the city’s solid refuse. All of this trash understandably attracts swarms of
well-fed rats and wild dogs. This area is slightly more difficult than the
entrance of the sewers.

Note: Skilled combatants entering the dumps will be chased off by crazy old
trash-dwellers. They are quite dangerous, allowing the dumps to be enjoyed by
younger fighters.

To reach the dumps, walk to the Junk Dealer, step west a pace, step northwest a
pace, and then enter the dumps to the north.

Colosseum Pits

A gaping pit has opened next to the Colosseum foundation, opening an entrance to
long-buried ruins of a street and the surrounding buildings. Rats now swarm the
area and provide good practice for young fighters.

To reach the pits, walk to the Colosseum, step west a pace, and follow the ramp
to the southeast. Once you reach the bottom of a sheer drop, rats will swarm.

Under the Boardwalk

The southwest edge of Quartz Heights is adorned with a boardwalk elevated off
of the beachfront. While the boardwalk is home to colorful shops and delicious
food, the beach it is built over swarms with large sandcrabs. The area might be
found useful to inexperienced hunters that are looking for either a fairly calm
experience or a sack full of crab meat.

Walk to Emerald Square. From there, follow the broad white cobblestone road to
the west. Turn southwest after a few paces and continue to follow the white
cobblestone road. Follow it to the end, turning west along it when it curves.
You will have stopped on a wide gray flagstone thoroughfare, just before a narrow
alley between large, crowded insulae. Take two paces southeast and one south onto
a sandstone thoroughfare. Follow it directly west to its end. Follow the rough
cobblestone road southward until a boardwalk barker loudly announces your
arrival. Mount the boardwalk and follow it west until you reach an intersection.
The trapdoor leading down to the beach is to your south.

Old City - Moondeep

Moondeep is an ancient burial ground in the Old City, which is rumored to be
the original center of Iridine. Now that it has fallen to ill-repair, snakes,
carrion beetles, and large acid-spitting lizards have found a home. The lizards
are quite dangerous and some training is needed to hunt here.

Walk to the Colosseum, step east until you reach the crossroads, step east
down an ancient cobbled road, follow that north until you reach an intersection,
step west three paces, and then the area to your direct south is where the
beasts roam.

Note: The fire-lizards very accurately spit acid that can eat into clothing and
armor.

Harbor Sea Caves

The harbor sea caves are a natural set of caverns carved into the sea cliffs by
an ancient underground river. The river has since disappeared, but the caverns
have been broken into by some industrious sewer beast and are now accessible
from the Riverside sewers. Serpents, massive crabs, and lost sailors wander
around the caverns.

Follow the directions required to reach the southern branch of the Riverside
sewers. Follow the path until an intersection. Take the northwestern path until
you reach a rusty grate. At the bottom of the grate is the entrance to the sea
caves.

Note: The western end of the sea caves exits to the sea, at the bottom of a
sheer cliff. A talented climber can use this as a less odorous shortcut to the
caverns. Bring plenty of sacks or a wagon, as the profitable crab parts are
very bulky.

Old City Tunnels

A set of tunnels frequented by lunatics and heretics exists east of Moondeep,
under a broken structure. Large carrion snakes and scythe bugs roam the tunnels
and quarrel with the loonies.

Walk to the Colosseum, step east until you reach the crossroads, step east
down an ancient cobbled road, follow that north until you reach an intersection,
step east a pace, step southeast two paces, and step east a pace. The broken
door to your north is the entrance. Enter it, descend, and the beasts roam to

Iridine Steps Sewers

The sewers below the Steps are unfortunately in ill-repair. The lack of good
maintenance leads to regular blockages that cause flooding and provides ample
residence for vermin and the large, dangerous reptiles that feed on them.

Walk to the Hospice of the Morning Light. From there, walk east until you pass
under the portcullis that marks entry into the Steps. From there, step east two
paces and take the dusty lane northward. Follow that until you can take a
similarly wide lane eastward. Follow that to the end and stop before entering
any building. Step north into the alley, and west through the door. The first
entrance to the sewers is downward from here.

Note: There are dozens of entrances into the sewers. The above is the closest
to the portcullis. The nature of the Steps sewers leaves many passages blocked
by sewage and other entrances may be preferable for hunting.

Franlius Sewers

The Franlius sewers weave under the war-torn streets. The usual excreta is the
least of an adventurer’s concerns, as the Cinerans use the locale as a prison.
Debilitatingly venomous sail snakes glide through tunnels ridden with crippling
traps.

From the town square on our side of the river, follow the road to the north
until you reach the town square on the Cineran side. Follow the road east from
there. Step north just before the end of the road and then east into the stables.
The entrance to the sewers is just south of you.

Note: Do not go here unless you are immensely confident in your ability to
dodge. A single bite from a sail snake, if it pierces your thigh armor, will
slowly inflame until you are unable to move that leg. Make sure to enter the
area warily, only focusing more on your offense after you are confident in
your defense. Also beware the crippling traps and the entrance trapdoor
being locked by Cinerans. It’s essential to bring a locksmith, and highly
suggested to learn your way from someone knowledgeable of the layout.

Rock Valley Dumps

The Rock Valley dumps is where all refuse created in the town or Rock Valley
is eventually piled into wagons and shipped to. Here the garbage rots in the
warm sun and is picked through by ravenous swarms of varied critters.

Start just outside the eastern gate of Rock Valley. Follow the rutted track to
the southeast. At its end, the dumps opens up to your east.

Fenri-Gifr Ruins - Meadow

The Fenri-Gifr ruins is an ancient, desolate temple deep in the grasslands of
the valley. The meadow surrounding it is dotted with burrows of large lizards
and unique beetles.

Start outside the eastern gate of Rock Valley. Step six paces to the southeast.
Walk directly east until you stop, at the edge of a hill. Step southeast off the
hill. Walk east again until you stop in a grassy meadow. The surrounding, small
central meadows is your destination, not the ruins or grasslands they adjoin.

Note: The jolt bugs have an odd defense mechanism that will give you a strong
jolt if you strike them with metal weapons or while wearing metal armor. This
also occurs when they strike you, and can be dangerous when swarmed.

Burial Grounds

The burial grounds is a graveyard of heroes from a bygone era. At the far end
of a sweltering, steamy cave system and a cliff-side trek lies a mausoleum
housing an ancient political figure. Other mausoleums are thought to exist
within the structure, but caved-in rubble has blocked their discovery. Some
value can be found in the unique and dangerous creatures that roam the cavern.

Start just outside the Rock Valley dumps, on the rutted track. Follow the track
two paces to the northwest. Walk directly northeast until you can’t. Step north,
and the burial grounds are underneath you.

Broken Tower

This broken tower stands on the crest of a hill in the center of the valley. Its
ruined halls spiral up the tower and are lined with puzzling traps. A keen mind
or agile body will help a hunter reach the top. Turtles riddled with nest-holes
have a symbiotic relationship with the odd bees that live within them, where the
bees will defend the turtle, quite ably, to the death. The tower is quite
dangerous to many, as the turtles are well-defended and will block your escape.

Starting just east of the Rock Valley gate, walk east until you step onto a
wooded hill. Step southeast a couple paces before continuing east. Stop once you
reach the tower.

Resting Place - Entrance

The resting place is a dangerous cave system that has recently been bolted
closed. The mysteries residing inside will fortunately not lure any new
adventurers, who often found themselves gravely injured by swarms of leech
spiders. The accessible entrance houses some vermin of no significance.

Starting just east of the Rock Valley gate, walk east until you reach a wooded
hill. Stop just before the hill, on the grassland border. Walk straight south
until you enter a forest. Keep going south until you reach a clearing.

Note: The resting place is currently locked closed. If it is found open, it is
highly recommended that it is left undisturbed, as it is known for being a
deathtrap. This entry describes just the entrance.

Burnt Villa

North of the city lies a burnt villa next to its burnt fields. Some time after
the villa’s unfortunate fate, large insects have begun nesting in its basement.
While the wasps can provide some danger, the villa is quite profitable and
active for the difficulty it presents.

Walk to the carcass buyers. From outside, step west and follow the road out of
the city. Step two paces north of the end of the road and walk northeast until
you stop at the villa. Enter the yard to the north, walk west until you reach
the atrium. Step north through a hidden hole in the rubble. The trapdoor leads
you to a web of tunnels you will find these insects in.

Spider Caverns

Just northwest of the Traevent Militia’s fort, the spider caverns are an
immense web of twisting caverns underneath the grasslands. As the name suggests,
these caverns are a lair of many massive spiders. They are not overly dangerous
and a smart hunter would ignore them and seek out larger, serpentine prey.

Walk to the Vetallun Road Marker. Walk to the Vetallun Crossroads from there,
but stop once you see a wagon trail to your north. Step two paces northeast

Swamp Mansion

At the far north edge of the swamp, an abandoned mansion has been swallowed by
the muck. Bats, rats, and swamp snakes can be found here. The northeast corner
has a surprisingly slippery hole that may swallow unlucky adventurers. To
escape once fallen, jumping at the hole to grab the ledge may help.

Walk to the Vetallun Road Marker. Walk, from there, to the Vetallun Crossroads,
but stop once you see grassland open to the northeast. Take seven more steps
eastward. From there, walk directly north. You will pass the wooded hill and
then the river, through a muddy bank. Be careful of quicksand. If you get
caught in a patch, swim in the direction you came from. If you struggle, have
a friend pull you out. Once you reach the north edge of the swamp, walk east

Swamp Vale

The swamp vale is a small, densely-fogged depression surrounding a sulfurous
pond. The extremely dense vegetation and climate attracts alligators, small
and large, and swamp beetles. The area is rather isolated and known as being an
occasional target for bandits and street rats that want to train in isolation.

Walk to the Vetallun Road Marker. Walk, from there, to the Vetallun Crossroads,
but stop once you see grassland open to the northeast. Take seven more steps
eastward. From there, walk directly north. You will pass the wooded hill and
then the river, through a muddy bank. Be careful of quicksand. If you get
caught in a patch, swim in the direction you came from. If you struggle, have

can be seen from afar with a quick gaze if you get lost.

Spider Temple

Very deep inside the Oak Forest is hidden an underground complex that I will
refer to as the Spider Temple. Some unfortunate soul intended to use the
extremely deadline arachnids as protection and had built a small shrine to
Ereal and a living space below the tunnels. The spiders have broken through from
one area to the other and now swarm the entire complex. The area is both very
dangerous, due to the leech spiders, and not very profitable. I can only
recommend it for the daring pilgrim.

Start at the Vetullun Crossroads. Walk to Blackvine, stopping once you see
a clearing and the forest. With the clearing just to your north, step southeast
a pace and then walk northeast. Stop at a clearing centered around a tower.
Step south and walk east until you reach a statue. The temple is below you.

Notes: The leech spiders are very likely to kill a lone adventurer. Do not go
here alone. There are also a few generally non-lethal traps.

An expansive catacombs exists under the Monlon Temple. While the area was once

only the generic large bats can now be found. There is no good hunting to be

Monlon Mines - First Level

The northeast edge of Monlon adjoins a mine. The mine is open to the public and
is a good source of income for miners and beast hunters. A pick can be purchased
in the supply shop above the mine. The mines itself contains three levels, each
deeper area providing more dangerous foes. There are also a few unstable areas
that may expose the curious to gas or falling rocks.

From the north edge of Monlon, follow the barren hillsides to the east and south
until a path opens to the northeast. Follow that path to the end, taking any
twists and turns. Once in the clearing, the first ladder down is to your south.

Monlon Barracks

There is an abandoned barracks to the northwest of Monlon, at the end of a
rocky trail people dub the rockslide. The barracks has become the refuge of the
sloani population that has escaped the Temple’s extermination efforts, as well
as the amphibian statorus and occasional large scorpions. While the area does
not take significant training to master, the sloani can be very dangerous to the
inexperienced.

From the northern edge of Monlon, follow the hills directly westward. At the
end, step north into the path of rocky rubble. Follow it northeast four paces,
northeast three, west three, and northwest one. The door to the northwest is the
entrance to the barracks.

frothing snout covered in warts. Bare splotches on its fur are covered with
small teaming bugs.

Sickly rat
The crude image before you is of a sickly yellow rat with tiny little black eyes
and a thick white tail about as long as its body. Missing patches of fur expose
bits of dark brown, flaking skin.

Plague-ridden rat
You see a carefully drawn illustration of a filthy specimen of city vermin. The
creature has a long, hairless tail with odd dark splotches as well as a
pronounced snout and large front teeth. It is covered all over with vomit green
fur. Large patches of its skin is bare, however, and it has numerous whitish
sores that you might imagine would emit a horrid stench.

Other Vermin

Osecar
You stare at an illustration of a small wild-eyed animal which is about a foot
and a half tall and is covered with striped brown fur. Its long, thick-looking
teeth, powerful front legs and heavy claws mark it as a natural digger. It has
a bloated tail, which it can rest on and sit upright. It looks remarkably agile.

Sewer rodent
You see an image of a reddish-brown rodent, its fur slick with slime and sewer
waste. It is roughly the size of a grown man's forearm, with a tail about one
and a half times as long. Under its elongated snout, you see a set of sharp
carnivore teeth. It looks as if it would reek of waste and rotting flesh.

Large bat
You sight a simple depiction of a large bat with coarse brown-black fur and a
wingspan of two feet.

Bat with long ears
You look upon the image of a small bat with short brown hair. It's wings span a
little over a foot. It stares back at you with cold black eyes placed just above
a pig like nose.

Molerat
You catch sight of an image of what can only be described as a large, hairless
rat with long, sharp claws and a large set of front teeth. Its defunct eyes gaze
out blindly, set in wrinkled and pale skin.

Fluvitur pup
You see a sketch of a small mammal that looks like a cross between a rat and an
aquatic puppy. The pup has soft, brown fur and highly-muscled hind legs. The
fluvitur pup is drooling all over itself.

Fluvitur
You look upon the image of a massive rodent which stands low to the ground. It
is covered with matted brown fur. You note that it has strong hind legs,
contrasted by puny forelegs. The fluvitur has no tail and a thick membrane
covers its eyes. It has canine-like jaws and teeth. The fluvitur appears to be
snarling at you!

between several undeterminable breeds. Almost as tall as a man's hips, it has a
wide frame and is covered with brown-streaked grey fur. Its neck and legs are
wrapped with thick muscles. Its lips curl back into a snarl that bares sets of
large, yellowish teeth.

Hound

short fur is uneven and untended, with several bare spots that reveal lingering
scars. Its frame is thin, affording you a good look at its well-developed
musculature. The mouth foams, hungry tongue rolling out over yellowish teeth.

subtly patterned brownish-tan skin and a blunt-nosed head.

Massive subterranean serpent
Two dimly glowing jacinth eyes look back at you from the illustration of this
massive, slithering mass of scales. This serpent has grown to be as long as twice
the height of a man, and has the width of a tree trunk. A bright red forked tongue
hisses out of its triangular head, and its thick black scales seem to absorb more
light than they reflect.

Sea snake
Before you is a careful imaging of a huge snake that must be twenty feet long. Its
sides appear slick with water and ripple with heavy muscles. Two foot-long fangs
dominate its facial features. It gazes out from the image with yellow, slitted
eyes.

Carrion snake
You gaze at a loathsome sight. This illustration is of a slug-like, serpentine
monster that must be at least thirty feet in length. It is armored with thick black
scales, has slitted yellow eyes and lethal-looking fangs. A pile of dismembered and
half-dissolved human limbs lie in a puddle nears its head. You might imagine the
stench of carrion.

Sail snake

eyes gaze out amidst midnight black scales. The tail, which takes up the
majority of the animal's length, is very slender and covered with faintly-
glowing yellow spots. It's legs are thick and muscular. The creature parts its
mouth, revealing a maw that contains rows of tiny, but sharp teeth.

Schtraffeg
You see a finely crafted illustration of a stout reptile with a rounded body
roughly the size of a small bed. It has four stubby legs leading to flat feet,
each endowed with four large black claws. The brown scaly skin which covers its
surface appears to be thick and robust, extending the full length of the long
tail and forming a club the size of a melon at the end.

Nest turtle
You see a depiction of a long, flat turtle with blue-green scales and yellow
tinted eyes. Its shell bulges several feet above it, in a grotesque array of
wax-like holes and orifices. The maw of this creature features sharp,

Beetles

Carrion beetle
You look down at the drawing of a narrow beetle that is about the size of a
small dog. Its legs are very short, which makes it walk close to the ground.
The beetle is dark brown in color, has large, green eyes and small mandibles.
Its carapace doesn't seem to be very thick.

Pod beetle

It is olive in color, but is also accented by streaks of black. It has six
long legs, heavy mandibles and black eyes. Extending from its head is a foot-
long sharp horn jutting out from its carapace. It appears to be chirping.

Blischa'ag
The imaging of this rat-sized insect shows it covered in a grey and beige
mottled carapace, almost indistinguishable from a common rock unless it were
moving. Three bony legs jut from either side of its round body giving it a
scuttling, sideways movement not unlike a crab. A double pair of mandibles
jut from the front of its head.

Obsidian scarab
Any bystander might mistake the depicted creature for a lump of rock. The
shell is composed of a variety of hard stones, mostly black rock, that has
been fused together with an organic goo. In between the ground and the lower
part of its shell, you can spot two twitching antennae and a jagged set of
pincers. Little wiggly lines have been drawn next to the pincers, as to signal
a constant emanating noise.

tall. Its eight long legs are covered in bands of brown and grey hair, each of
which terminate in a splayed trio of feet.

Leech spider

move with some difficulty, its eight legs splayed beneath a thick slimy body.
It has a large mouth at one end and a suction pad at the other which seems to
secrete a sticky white substance.

Carrion stalker
You see a careful sketch of a spidery creature with four double-jointed legs
and black, leathery skin. The vestigial remnants of two pale eyes are set above
a small, leech-like mouth. Each long leg ends in a sharp talon, upon the tips
of which it moves about. Underneath the abdomen, you catch sight of a short,
bent stinger.

Rock crab
You look down at an image of a small, brown crab. It has a fairly soft carapace
and big, serrated claws. It looks out at you with eyes that sit up on little
stalks.

Large sandcrab

and multi-faceted eyes. It appears to be watching you.

Shield bee
You see a sketch of a foot-long bee with an unusually large wingspan. It has a
furry coat of dark crimson, striped with black. The bee's most prominent
features are its mandibles. The sharpened carapace is about the length of its
entire body, and double-jointed.

You see a sketch of a foot-long bee with an unusually large wingspan. It has a
furry coat of dark crimson, striped with black. The bee's most prominent
features are its mandibles. The sharpened carapace is about the length of its
entire body, and double-jointed. It is currently using those mandibles as a
shield, taking advantage of the added joint to coat its body in carapace.

Scythe bug
Your eyes take in the imaging of a monstrous, narrow insect with faceted orange
eyes. A reddish heavy carapace covered most of its body. This bug's front legs
are heavily developed and covered with razor-sharp carapace edges. Conversely,
its mandibles are fairly small. It seems to attack with its front legs and that
makes it look somewhat crablike.

Pungopiscor
You see a depiction of what would have normally been an ordinary scorpion, if
it was not the size of a small cow. It has a reddish-black shell that bears a
moist, slimy sheen. Irregular clusters of marble-sized glassy black eyes are
placed above a delicate-looking mouth. The creature appears to have six pairs of
limbs. The first two are small and placed beside the insect's maw. The second two
are a powerful set of snapping claws. The third, fourth, and fifth pairs are
skeletal legs that end in broad, almost web-like, feet. The final pair of limbs
are harpoon-like stingers that arch over the top of the beast.

Large roach
You see a crude sketch of a very large roach. It’s hastily drawn, as if the
artist wanted something better to draw. One antennae is missing.

Birds

Angry gull
You see a sketch of a large, dirty seagull. Its feathers are filthy and it looks
like it would reek of rotten fish and garbage. It gives a menacing glare.

Large raven
You see a careful imaging of a large black bird with glossy feathers. Its black
beak and legs give it a somewhat eerie appearance. The bird would sit at least
three feet tall with a wing span of double that.

Black, flightless carrion bird
Before you is a meticulous illustration of a huge black bird. Its coarse black
feathers seem to bristle about its body rather than lying flat and glossy smooth,
and its wings appear to be little more than vestigial limbs. It has black, beady
eyes that seem to watch you with an unsettling bright interest and a blade-sharp
black beak that appears designed only for tearing flesh efficiently.

Oddities

Chaulidodus sloani
You see an attentive drawing of a four-legged creature with a long, slender
body. It is almost six feet in length, covered with dark bluish-green scales
that shimmer with light. Its fish-like head bears a pair of milky white eyes
atop a wide maw. The lower jaw extends farther than the upper jaw, with sharp
fangs that protrude upwards. A ridge follows its spinal column as it winds down
its back and long tail. Its mouth opens to reveal a long, slimy tongue.

Statorus
This image depicts a small, brown-skinned aquatic creature that bears some
resemblance to a large frog, though its limbs are stunted. It possesses a pair
of relatively large fins and large eyes that protrude from the top of its head.
The creature stares forward with its mouth half-open, revealing two rows of
large teeth.

Carrion slug
You see a sketch of a thick slug at least two feet in length. It is feature-
less save for two translucent antennae and a round mouth that drips clear
liquid. The flesh is semi-transparent, allowing you to view the working of
inner organs and the flow of it's bodily liquid. Its hide appears wet, sticky,
and smooth.

Quivering ooze
You cast your gaze over a drawing of an enormous collection of ooze. Sticks and
other detritus which cover it in most places lends itself to camouflage, looking
mostly like a pile of oily-slick wilderness refuse. It has no limbs or sensory
organs that you can detect. Nevertheless, the inclusion in this appendix would
imply this particular mass of ooze is quite animated. You think you see what
might be some form of mid-growth pseudopod.
