Rolpa

Date: 229th Year of the Republic
Seated: Tertiana Gordia
Accused: Rolpa
Accuser: Durus, on behalf of the Iridine Constables
Brief Summary: Repeat offender tried for various assaults. Sentence commuted to time served and ordered to pay a fine of one talent per reported victim.
Detailed Summary:
During the appointment of Assistant Steps Justice Tertiana Gordia, the trial of Rolpa was heard. Constable Durus presented evidence as the prosecutor on behalf of the accuser. Verrucosis worked as the counsel for the accused, Rolpa.
After constable Durus presented sound evidence for the crime against the accused, Justice Gordia turned to Verrucosis for a response. What followed was a long statement in defense of the accused.
Verrucosis was quoted as saying, "I thank you, Justice Gordia, for taking the time to try this case. Likewise, I thank Constable Durus for presenting the list of charges. The list of charges is quite extensive. As any list will do, it omits as much as it states. First, let us consider the charges for which he has served time: the assaults. Let me first say that, while some of the assaults were legitimate assaults, they all certainly were not, and do not consist of a trended behavior. Even those that were assaults were only enacted following gross insults being flung unfairly at Rolpa. Who would not defend his honor and the honor of his mother against untrue statements?"
The counsel for the accused continued, "Indeed, constable Durus referred to an instance in which Rolpa attacked me. And yet, here I stand, defending this man. Clearly, I do not hold him entirely responsible for the incident. My tongue, while it can be directed to some skill at times, sometimes can cause me to offend someone greatly. This was the case with Rolpa. I actually admire the way that he held his temper for the duration that he did. He showed a great deal of restraint and tolerance."
"Following the incident, I respected his calmness. He has defended citizens who were under attack for a number of his assaults. At one point, Pimius was being brutally attacked by Kersepius. Rolpa, honorably defending his loyal friend, ended this attack by attacking Kersepius himself. Can he really be blamed for coming to the aide of a citizen of Iridine?"
"Next, we come to the charge of larceny. Also, during these assaults, at what point did he loot the possessions of any of his victims? The truth of it is simply that he never seized items belonging to his victims. At one point, he did take the items from one individual, but did so only to prevent their being taken by true looters, and returned them as soon as he was able."
"Rolpa has also served Iridine faithfully, sending many Cinerans to the grave for stepping foot on Iridine's holy soil. Mind you, he did this not because it was his occupation, but because it was an urge so strong that he could not but obey it. Rolpa has saved many callow youths from a most bloody and painful death at the hands of brigands and bandits, who are enemies of the Republic and wish harm and pain upon our citizens. Indeed, Rolpa saved Telena at one point, who was honored with citizenship following years of service and loyalty. As the facts of the case reveal, Rolpa is hardly considered a persistent and dangerous threat to the Republic, and does indeed hold value and has served Iridine faithfully despite a small number - much smaller than the erroneous number of charges - of attacks."
After this long ramble, Tertiana Gordia asked the defense counsel, "Are you done, Verrucosis?" Verrucosis said he was and thanked the Justice.
Justice Tertiana Gordia then turned back to the prosecuting constable and asked about witnesses. Constable Durus did not bring any witnesses forth but gave the following statement in response to Verrucosis.
Durus rebutted, "Justice, but I do 'ave a few things ta mention. If we take a look back at previous cases, we would find that repeat assailants often use the killin' of Cinerans, brigands and bandits as a defense. Andrew, Metharus… Does this prove anythin' beyond that the men on trial are wholesome individuals? Far from it. It's not a matter of duty, it's a matter of enjoyin' the slaughter of men when they know they will not be prosecuted."
With these words, Verrucosis stood up and objected that "Rolpa is not Andrew, or Metharus." Lady Tertiana Gordia scowled and told Verrucosis to be seated.
Durus continued saying, "Additionally, the Tables are black and white. Assault is assault no matter the circumstance if we follow their definition constables frequently use their own experience in cases. If the arrestin' officer felt things were truely justified, 'e'd likely not be in a cell."
Once again Justice Tertiana Gordia asked if the prosecution had witnesses, Durus responded that the prosecution had no witnesses at this time. Justice Tertiana Gordia turned to Verrucosis. He was asked the same question and replied that he did not.
After a pause, Justice Tertiana Gordia indicating closing the trial for a verdict. She asked the prosecuting constable the following question, "Would it be possible, with some research to assemble a list of victims?" In reply, Durus said, "Yes, ma'am. Victims could likely be found fer every case, and possibly even short descriptions of the arrest and circumstances."
Upon Justice Gordia's return, she turned toward the accused and said, "I have considered this case, quite seriously. Rolpa, you are not a nice man. Your actions speak louder than any introduction. Rolpa, I'd be very, very, careful what you say to me. Rolpa, I am telling you this in all seriousness. If I EVER see you in my courtroom again..for any reason…for any crime…I do not care HOW petty. You will be branded. Rolpa, I will also tell all the other justices to consider that. IF you are ever branded, the next crime….no matter how petty will unequivocally result in your death. Consider that. You MAY not assault the residents of our city. Even if they insult you, or your mother. There is NO excuse for that behavior. Whatsoever. Rolpa, are we clear on that?"
Rolpa replied, "Sure are, ma'am."
Tertiana Gordia continued saying to the accused, "Now, I believe that you have served enough time for the crimes you have committed, therefore, I am absolving you of your remaining jail time. HOWEVER…..A list of your victims will be compiled. You will pay one talent recompense to each. This MUST be carried out within one month."
Rolpa interrupted by speaking, "Okay, dunno if I will have that much but I'll earn some."
As a final remark, Justice Tertiana Gordia declared, "I will be following up with Verrucosis, and with officer Durus to make sure you do this, if you do not, you will be arrested for fraud. And again, I warn you…I had better never see you in this courtroom again, as a defendant. You are free to go."
At that, the courtroom was dismissed. Rolpa was set free to fulfill the financial obligations sentenced upon him.

Millo

Date: 17th day of Allinius, 229th Year of the Republic
Seated: Gratio Orbilio
Accused: Millo Harper
Accuser: Seracen, on behalf of Legio I
Brief Summary: Accused charged of treason in conjunction with bandit activities. Sentenced to lifetime enslavement in the Colosseum and a fine of fifty talents.
Detailed Summary:
On the night of the 17th day of Allinius in the 229th Year of the Republic, Justice Gratia Orbilio held the trial of Millo Harper.
During the pretrial discussions within the gallery, soldier Seracen was heard commenting on the prisoner, "He was only arrested for minor assault. But I can request treason and major be put on him for his attack on you. He's a repeat offender. As he has a very long record, treason would be needed for little more than to see him put to trial and executed. I'd need to speak with a constable to get specifics, but I believe it's more than enough to see him put to trial or death."
Legio soldier Seracen prosecuted the prisoner, while a person named Yahovskamon worked as the counsel for the accused. As she spoke from the seat of the Justice, Gratia Orbilio ordered the trial to begin. She further stated, "Millo Harper, you are accused of treason, in that you knowingly aided a traitor to the Republic."
She continued, "The prosecution will first give their case."
Seracen began by saying, "Millo was found at a bandit camp where Rindak was reported to have stayed before it was destroyed. Also, a civilian by the name of Pocethary has claimed Millo repeatedly tried to recruit him into Rindak's band of brigands. For those charges, Lady Justice, the Legio would like to see Millo Harper tried for treason and suffer the maximum penalty, should he be convicted.
With these words, Gratia Orbilio turned her eyes to the accused and his representative, and asked for their statement.
Yahovskamon declared, "Millo Harper, like many in Iridine, have felt the powers of peer pressure. The hold of blackmail and threats are indeed a powerful influence. There are those who wish Millo to be put to death, and there are those who trust in Millo's honesty and innocence. Throughout the ordeal concerning Rindak, Millo claims to have no affiliation with him. The Legio has many times had falsehoods with their arrests, making mistakes, for they are only human. I believe this is one of them, and will proceed to attempt to prove so." With those words, Yahovskamon said, "I'm finished."
Orbilio asked the prosecution for witnesses to be called, and Seracen called Millo to the stand. A series of questions and answers followed between the two.
Seracen began by asking, "Millo, these charges regarding your involvement with Rindak have been spread out over several weeks, if not months. What do you attribute that to?"
The question was met with silence.
"Should I take that to mean that you do not know how to answer for yourself, Millo?" After a long pause in which Millo did not reply, the question was repeated.
In response, Millo said, "I say weeks yes but months no. I was to do this bidding or die. I had no choice. They told me they would kill me if I said no."
Seracen further asked, "So, while you were supposedly under duress, you were bragging about your ties to Rindak over thoughts, heard by many, a multitude of times. Wouldn't you agree that this sounds somewhat… strange?" Millo rebutted, "No no, not with Rindak. For some people called the Shadowmen. I seen no ones face. It could have been you for all I know."
Seracen continued, "Then if it isn't strange, how would you have us believe that you were both under duress -and- proud of your allegiance? Ah. This mysterious group called the Shadowmen … though you never saw their faces, approximately how many in number would you say there were?"
Millo replied, "I was proud to be getting wealthy, and that they had come to trust me and not make threats as much."
Seracen questioned, "So… you're denying the fact that you thought out that you acted willingly, after a time?"
Millo mentioned, "I only say 3 the first day. After that I was left scrolls at the camp where to meet and give them names of those who said yes or no."
Seracen added, "Better yet, couldn't your prior statement proves that you -weren't- acting under duress before to long, as they stopped threatening you?"
Millo responded, "I was acting out yes. but not making threats. I was just saying that those who were on my list should come and join and that things would be better for them. As it was getting for me. Yes that is true, and it was wrong."
Seracen pointed, "Ah. So you don't deny that you were trying to recruit people to this operation, this operation that had distinct ties to Rindak?"
Millo noted, "The money was a lot. I could buy almost anything."
Seracen queried, "So you think wealth is a reason to align yourself with bandits and become an enemy of the republic. Fascinating."
Millo nodded, "And not be killed as well. Even though the threats had stopped, they were still there if I tried to get out."
Seracen further asked, "What were your activities working for these 'Shadowmen'?"
Millo stated, "Surely for what I have done ….My 6 months in jail is time enough. And now I hear Rindak is no more so there is no more recruiting for me to do."
Puzzled Seracen asked further, "You didn't answer my question. What were your 'responsibilities' working for these Shadowmen, as you call them?"
Millo declared, "I was to approach the people on my list and mark if they said yes or no. Most said no."
Seracen went on, "And then what happened to those who said no?" Millo answered, "And those that said yes have been brought in as well already," Seracen asked, "And more importantly, what, did you ask them? To join the group?" Millo said, "I do not know what happened for sure……I do think they would try to kill them or capture them in some way. I was not a part of that."
Seracen motioned, "Did you ask them to join the group? What were you to approach them for?" Millo, in reply said, "I was to ask if they were tired of the way the constables are running thing at first. If they thought they could run thing better. If these people answered yes to these then I was to tell them about the Shadowmen and ask them to join. That was all. Then leave a scroll at the camp."
Seracen noted by saying, "I see. So you were basically recruiting for the Shadowmen. Knowingly assisting a group of bandits, enemies of the Republic. No further questions, Justice."
After this long exchange, Justice Gratia Orbilio asked Seracen if he had more witnesses to call. Seracen mentioned the name of Hellene, who was brought forth to testify.
During his questioning, Seracen asked if Hellene could confirm the presence of Millo at the Bandit camp of Rindak. Hellene confirmed the query of the prosecution.
At the end of questioning Hellene, Seracen had no more witnesses to call. Justice Gratia Orbilio called the accused counsel to call their first witnesses.
Yahovskamon called Hellene back to the stand and attempted to dismiss her court testimony by asking a series of loaded questions. Further, he pointed to the large 'H' upon her forehead and further tried to prove her inability to answer questions correctly, attacking her credibility. After a period of time, Justice Orbilio halted the questioning of Hellene. Yahovskamon then requested the prosecutor of the case, Seracen, to the stand.
In a series of questions, the counsel for the accused attempted to defame the work of the Legio in the case of Millo. He also requested to see the Legio reports regarding the criminal activities of Rindak and Millo. In these statements, Yahovskamon tried to damage the reputation of the Legio and the soldier Seceran specifically.
Once again, Justice Gratia Orbilio halted the proceedings of the accused counsel and warned the counsel Yahovskamen as to the validity of his questioning. Before she retired for a verdict, she asked the following question, "Seracen, can you give me a very brief indication of the crimes committed by this Rindak and his band?"
Seracen responded by saying, "Yes ma'am. Rindak took to banditry along Vetallun Road and near the Campus Martius, his campaign of terror lasting several weeks. A young lady by the name of Tovania was sold to the Cineran Army by Rindak. Rindak was not only working as a bandit, but in collaboration with Cineran and Aestivan Forces. He also slew several children in the village of Vetallun, as well as several patricians. His remains are mounted on a pilum before the gates of the Vetallun Fortress, as is customary when the Legio kills or apprehends an enemy of the Republic with a list of crimes so grievous."
After a short consideration, Gratia Orbilio made the following statement upon the accused, "Millo Harper, you are guilty of collaborating with the traitor Rindak and his gang. Due to your non-combat role in the treason and your already long-served sentence in prison, I am willing to forgo the death penalty, as I believe that should be reserved for those who have committed violent acts. However, I am not going to let this go lightly. You are hereby fined fifty talents and committed to slavery in the Colosseum."
"Millo, the verdict has been rendered. If you wanted to speak in your defense you should have had your representative call you as a witness. You will be returned to jail in the meantime, and I will be contacting the Assistant Steward in charge of games to inform him he has another gladiator on his hands."

Scaranthian, Cleburnus, Kersepius

Date: 29th day of Rindak, 230th Year of the Republic
Seated: Talius Noraetis
Accused: Scaranthian, Cleburnus, Kersepius
Accuser: Banic and Corvous on behalf of the Iridine Constables
Brief Summary: Three conspirators held on two counts of murder of a citizen. The trial was held in absentee with only the accused Scaranthian being represented. Scaranthian was sentenced to twelve months in prison and a fine of twenty five talents based on his prior legion service. Cleburnus was sentenced to two years in prison and a fine of sixty talents. Based on prior offenses, Kersepius was sentenced to lifetime enslavement as a gladiator.
Detailed Summary:
On afternoon on the 29th day of Rindak in the 230th Year of the Republic, Justice Talius Noraetis held court over the matter of Scaranthian, Cleburnus, and Kersepius. They were accused of two murders, the victims being Lucarian and Pompum, citizens of the Republic. The trial was held in the Forum Courthouse nearby the Well of Comitia.
Constables Banic and Corvous prosecuted the case and the trained court counsel Nomad defended the accused Scaranthian.
As Justice Noraetis began the proceedings, constable Banic started with this statement to the court, "If it pleases the court sir, the defendant Scaranthian was taken ill and could not be removed from the cell. Kersepius and Cleburnus have not turned themselves over to the constabulary as of yet sir."
After further clarification, Nomad indicated he was primarily assisting Scaranthian. With this Justice Talius Noraetis declared, "It seems we will be setting a new precedent today. This is something that has been discussed for some time. It is called an absentee trial. A trial is announced and scheduled, and then it is the accused responsibility to be present. If they are not present, the trial is held without them. So, you're not required to be at your own trial. But, since you are not present, you're not able to defend yourself. And therefore almost certainly found guilty. If they are found guilty, sentencing is completed and a warrant for their arrest is issued. Do the accusers understand Kersepius and Cleburnus will not be defending themselves?"
Turning to the bench of the accused, Justice Talius Noraetis declared, "Scaranthian, Cleburnus, and Kersepius are charged with two murders. Does the accused claim innocence from this charge?" Nomad responded, "Yes, Justice. The accused claims innocence."
Turning back to the prosecution Justice Talius Noraetis asked for their opening statement.
Constable Banic stood saying, "Thank you sir. We plan to show that on the 27th of Allinius, in the 230th Year of the Republic, two men working to support themselves in an honest and noble trade were brutally struck down by the defendants. Their equipment stolen, their employers left without their services for no reason other than the defendants thought they wouldn't be prosecuted."
Talius Noraetis now requested the accused to do the same.
From the bench of the accused, Nomad stated, "We intend to prove innocence on all counts. There was never any intent to commit a crime. Nor did my client commit one."
Upon these statements, officer Banic called Maitland as his first witness to relate to the court the events that occured on the 27th of Allinius.
In his statement Maitland offered the following, "I was in the Old City training my knife as well as my skinning. I was walking around and entered through one of the doors. As I walked in I saw Scaranthian decapitate Lucarian." Lucarian was the bodyguard of Golane. Maitland declared that Scaranthian used a bejeweled retalq gladius. Banic showed such a weapon to the courts, reportedly taken from the sack of Scaranthian after his arrest.
Continuing, Maitland stated that Scaranthian attempted to advance upon his person but was hindered by Maitland's guard, Pompum. Though Cleburnus tried to guard him from escaping, Maitland escaped and hid in her room.
The second witness for the accusers was Timithius. He lives with Maitland and awoke to find her scared stiff. He returned to the murder scene with her. He saw the corpses of the dead guards. He, then, called for constables. Upon stating as such to the court, Banic stated, "your honor, please let the record show that constable Corvous and I both saw the corpses."
In a twist to the trial, Banic requested the counsel Nomad to testify of a conversation upon the date of the 8th of Rindak, a conversation he witnessed between Banic and Kersepius. Nomad testified that Kersepius told Banic that he had never heard of Pompum or Lucarian and, "He said he had no knowledge of the crime whatsoever."
Under questioning, Nomad recalled that Kersepius believed he was being set up and that two names were behind the whole affair. One name was that of Inconnu, "in the employ of, or manipulated by, one Telena, who were waging a vendetta against him and others." Nomad also mentioned that Kersepius stated the name of Maitland as someone involved in the plot against himself and others. Upon this testimony, Nomad was excused.
As a final witness, officer Banic requested Justice Laphus Nicatian. It was apparent to the court that Justice Nicatian was prepared to declare a statement. Justice Nicatian stated to the court certain crimes against himself and property, namely the murder of his own personal guard by the hands of Kersepius. He also declared certain undisclosed threats against his person and the Legate Leonora Iullia.
As a final witness for the prosecution, officer Corvous read forth a long listing of crimes by the accused. Upon the completion of the lists of criminal behavior, the accusers ended their statements to which Justice Talius Noraetis requested defense counsel Nomad to call a witness.
In an attempt to a defense, Nomad was heard declaring, "Justice, I would only call one to testify to Scaranthian's valor on the battlefield, his devotion to this Republic. While in the Legion. But I do not need to. It is well known. Scaranthian has served Iridine well while serving in the legion. I planned on doing my best for my client, and I still intend to do so."
In a final declaration, Nomad requested, "Unless there is someone in this courtroom who contends they have concrete evidence of my client's innocence, I can only rely on the mercy of the court, and request personally that his service, and potential service may be taken into consideration."
Afterward, Justice Noraetis allowed five persons to make statements regarding the accused. Upon the completion of the five persons who spoke both for and against the accused, Talius Noraetis declared "the end of the trial." He added, "I've seen or heard nothing to convince me that any of the three are not guilty of this crime."
In his sentencing, Talius Noraetis said "For Scaranthian, I am pulled in different directions. He was not a particularly good soldier but he did put his life in danger to protect Iridine. That has to count for something. Then again, it was he who was seen finishing off Lucarian. Murder of a citizen carries with it a standard charge of up to two years in prison and a fine of thirty talents for each count. For his service of this Republic, I will only sentence Scaranthian to six months for each murder and a fine of twenty five talents."
"Cleburnus and Kersepius," Talius Noraetis continued, "not bother to show up and didn't send a representative. I sentence Cleburnus to one year for each murder and the maximum fine of thirty talents for each murder.
Justice Noreatis in his sentencing of Kersepius stated, "has shown a long history of criminal acts. He has threatened patricians and commoners alike. And these are just the crimes we know about. How many have gone unreported out of fear? It is this court's opinion that Kersepius represents a danger to Iridinian society and must be removed from public. Therefore, Kersepius will serve in gladiatorial slavery indefinitely - only through exploits in the arena may he win his freedom."
Talius Noraetis finished, "Because Kersepius and Cleburnus are not in custody, a warrant will be issued for their arrest. This court is adjourned."

Nyx

Date: 10th day of Invex, 234th Year of the Republic
Seated: Galas Lestas Flavius
Accused: Nyx
Accuser: Indea, on behalf of Legio I
Brief Summary: Foreign bandit found guilty of murder and multiple assaults and kidnapping and sentenced to execution.
Detailed Summary:
On the morning of the 10th of Invex, 234th Year of the Republic, the trial of Eleris Angonus "Nyx" was held at the Vetallun Court House. Consul's Aide Galas Lestas Flavius presided over the case. Accusing the self-proclaimed "bandit queen" was the Optio Indea Severa of Legio I. The prisoner, Nyx, defended herself.
Within her opening statement, Optio Indea presented evidence in the name of the Legio. She presented statements that Eleris Angonus committed crimes against the Republic and against her own people. Namely, that she is accused of killing the members of a trade caravan. She argued the accused kidnapped a man called Lupatrus, murdered four people, and seriously wounded two others. The counsel for the accuser requested the harshest punishment of Iridinian law to be sought against the accused.
In response, the prisoner accepted all of the charges laid against her save those of murder. She stated she had no hand in any of the deaths. When asked by Consul's Aide Flavius to clarify, she denied ordering the assault on numerous officials and residents, as well as endangering common trade routes. She claims to know only of the caravans and nothing about officials or residents.
When requested to call the first witness, Optio Indea called the prisoner to testify. The prisoner admitted being born the daughter of General Argonus of Cineran. Her nickname, Nyx, means "night" in Cineran. She led a band of men, the remnants of her father's army in the Traevant Forest. Under questioning, Nyx declared her band attacked and killed approximately 40 - 60 men, mostly caravan guards. The name "Bandit Queen" was a romantic term others gave to her but she felt fitting for the daughter of a great General.
She admitted taking the long haired Lupatrus due to his ability to command wolves in the forest. But she attested the man was very shy in terms of human contact and she merely wanted to speak with him. But during his rescue by friends, she became annoyed with Lupatrus and allowed her soldiers to have some leeway in torturing him.
As a second witness, Optio Indea called Kered Solace. He spoke regarding the rescue of Lupatrus and the capture of Nyx. Kered stated, "We happened to hear several screams of torture, myself and several others whom were out wandering around. Further investigation and sneaking we came on, Nyx and her men literally making that weirdo fellow with long hair scream in pain from their abuse. We moved on her and her men. They attacked us on sight, they lost. We turned over Nyx and what she had in her possession to the Legion, and released the prisoner."
Kered stated he was the former First Speaker of the Traevant Militia, a group that protected those who walked in the Traevant woods and along the Vetallun road. He mentioned that in his opinion if she was set free, "I've seen what she has done to caravans. She would cause strife again."
The final witness Optio Indea Severa called was Shade Mossdark y Dendrius. In her testimony, she declared that one funny thing was the smell on Nyx stated by the kidnapped Lupatrus. He said she smelled of silk and smoke. Speculation was laid upon how that smell was used in her attacks on caravans. She argued that perhaps the mere presence of that smell indicated she was indeed present at the assault which killed the four men.
Having been permitted to call witnesses, Nyx answered with, "Considering the favorable ones are dead or scattered, no."
At this point, final statements to the court were requested by Consul's Aide Galas Lestas Flavius.
Legio I Optio Indea stated, "By admittance of the accused, she did order the attacks on these innocent men who were operating along our Republic's trade routes. These crimes were committed without care or thought to the loyal citizens of Iridine, the families and friends of those she ordered executed, and the horrors endured by Lupatrus, whom she held captive. We have established, and upon her own testimony, that she was responsible for the orders that lead to this kidnapping and these men's deaths, and possibly many more that we aren't fully aware of. There can be no doubt in our mind as to the guilt of this callous woman who even as she stands on trial refuses to show remorse for these heinous crimes. The Legio just hopes for justice to reflect well on those who have lost their lives for her greed."
In her final statement, the prisoner acknowledged, "I have little to add, and I am a general's daughter, used to fighting, not words. I will say, I am Cineran. And, cut off from my army and homeland, I did what a Cineran is taught to do. Create as much trouble for the enemy as possible. I will not plead for my life, nor will I plead for the lives of my men. They were soldiers and will die as such. Only this I plead my belly."
After clarification, it was discovered that the Cineran prisoner was five months pregnant with the child Lupatrus.
In his sentencing, Consul's Aide Flavius found the prisoner Nyx guilty. He declared, "You admitted to your guild and showed no remorse for your crimes. You showed no mercy to those your ordered attacked and killed. Therefore I as the Consul's Aide show no mercy to you. It is my sentence that Nyx be punished by death. She is to have rope tied to each limb, and each rope will be tied to a separate horse. The horses will then be sent in opposite directions until Nyx's death. This execution will take place once all the preparations are made."
On the time stated for Nyx's execution an emissary from General Angonus arrived to negotiate the safe delivery of his grandchild. A short time of "truce" was agreed upon to allow the birth to take place. The emissary returned at the appointed time of birth and Nyx gave birth to a baby boy. The child was removed to Cinera and delivered to his grandfather. After which time, Nyx was executed according to her sentencing.

Aestus

Date: 19th day of Aera, 235th Year of the Republic
Seated: Celeres Illryia
Accused: Aestus Amon
Accuser: Trisidius and Kalis on behalf of the Iridine Constables
Brief Summary: Repeat offender tried for multiple assaults upon officials. Sentenced to a fine of sixty talents paid among his victims, fifteen public lashings and a four year enslavement.
Detailed Summary:
On the 19th of Aera, 235th Year of the Republic, Assistant Foreign Justice of the Forum Celeres Illryia held the trial of Aestus.
Not being able to find an advisor, the prisoner defended himself. The prosecutor for the constabulary was Trisidius and Kalis. Constable Corvous guarded the prisoner in the courtroom. Notables present in the gallery were Gratia Orbilio and Adipus Vestrunius.
As requested by the Assistant Justice, Trisidius began his opening statement. The constable expressed that punishment upon the foreigner Aestus Amon need be more severe that simply jailtime. On the 13th day of Scran of 235, the prisoner attacked some of Iridine's law enforcement officers. Trisidius remarked that any punishment of slavery or confinement time would not be sufficient to change the prisoner's behavior. While Trisidius indicated that monetary retribution was important in this case, it was the constable's desire that a death sentence be placed to stop the actions of the unrepentant prisoner. Trisidius added that a constable recruit named Ruine was in constant harassment from the prisoner, Aestus. In reply, Assistant Justice Celeres Illryia indicated he had copies of the reports.
Upon hearing the reference of Ruine being assaulted by Aestus inside the city, Assistant Justice Illryia called Ruine to the stand for testimony. Constable Kalis questioned Ruine. Ruine indicated that the accused continued to assault him even though warned by both the Constables and Legio. Kalis reiterated the fact that Ruine was a new constable recruit to lend to his credibility.
Upon the completion of Ruine's testimony, constable Trisidius spoke of a report from a dubious witness, a foreign Cineran named Tigrus. In his sworn statement, Tigrus indicated that Aestus assaulted him in the alleys and refused to allow anyone to assist him to recovery. He claimed Aestus then dragged Tigrus to the Hospice and stole the material possessions upon his person. Trisidius mentioned that the victim never recovered his things. In a final report, accusing constable Kalis mentioned that the prisoner also assaulted the Legio soldier, Ultimatius. Afterward, Justice Illyria and the accusing constables discussed several details of the case involving specific persons and actions of the prisoner.
When asked to present a defense, the prisoner Aestus refused. The constables were asked to make closing statements. In their closing statements, the constabulary reinforced the assaults and crimes of the victims. They implicated the prisoner as one among a few who assaulted a Legio soldier and constables on a regular basis. They claimed he attacked people in small bands along the Vetallun Road while flaunting all types of authority within the Republic. The accusing counsel concluded, "We must make a stand against this type of behavior to defend what we hold dear. We cannot allow a person to assault constables and Legio soldiers to simply be whipped and let go."
Upon the conclusion of the constable's testimony and final statement, Aestus was invited to speak. Aestus spoke of being goaded into his actions against others. He claimed Tigrus had recently put a friend of his into a coma, so he returned the favor. Concerning Ultimatius, Aestus indicated that the Legio soldier was a recruit at that time. In the case of being attacked by the constables, the prisoner declared he was assaulted by all sides and did not want to be "accidentally" killed like some by the constabulary. Aestus last statement was that, "he was not the menace that everyone makes him out to be."
Upon this, Assistant Justice Illryia recessed to make a decision. After what seemed a long time, Celeres Illryia declared that though the matter of the assault of the constables was correct, the matter of Tigrus's and Ruine's assault was a bit off the mark. The Justice surmised that "though his crimes are heinous, he had not killed anyone. He had not been to trial before, so he had no warning of greater punishment."
The prisoner was ordered to reimburse constables Trisidius, Flar and Mystikqua twenty talents each. It was noted that if the prisoner could not pay from his savings, then his possessions would be sold off to cover the cost. In addition, the prisoner was sentenced to fifteen lashes and enslavement to Optio Indea of Legio I for four years.
After the flogging was delivered, the prisoner was placed into the custody of Optio Indea.

Irelius

Date: 19th day of Invex, 235th Year of the Republic
Seated: Mortarian Santum
Accused: Irelius
Accuser: Kalis, on behalf of the Iridine Constables
Brief Summary: Foreigner charged with the murder of a citizen. Sentenced to execution after several eyewitness accounts of the crime.
Detailed Summary:
On the 19th of Invex in the 235 Year of the Republic, Foreign Steps Justice Mortarian Santum held the trial of the Cineran cestus user, Irelius. The trial was held in the Steps Courthouse. Irelius was charged with the murder of the citizen Grendol Signa. This crime was said to have taken place within an establishment owned by Leda and Cassius nearby the Stone Toga Inn in the harbor.
The prosecuting constable was Kalis. The prisoner decided to defend himself against the brought charges.
In accusation against the accused, Leda gave written testimony of seeing the murder take place inside her place of business. Kalis gave evidence of this fact in his opening statement.
Within his opening statement, the prisoner spoke passionately. He stated he was already looking to have retribution upon Grendol by means of the legal system and posed the question of what benefit would killing Grendol bring him. The prisoner also stated that the corpse of Grendol was found at the boulder area. He claimed a few witnesses, Othento and Anahstas, indicated that it was perhaps already a few days old. He claimed because of this the timeline between the murder and the finding of the corpse was wrong. Irelius claimed that there are so many people who spar in the dojo and that perhaps Leda was confused. He also indicated his patronage in the household of Gratia Orbilio.
"How could I commit a crime to rupture that relationship?" he asked. Upon these statements, Irelius finished his opening testimony.
At this point, Justice Santum invited Kalis to begin calling witnesses. Kalis promptly began his evidence. The constable stated affirmatively that Leda said, Grendol was done in by the prisoner, Irelius. It was shown Cassius and the clerk at the mail room both witnessed this event as well. Irelius claimed that Grendol agreed to a death match, despite death matches being illegal. Kalis further stated that all three claimed seeing Irelius drag away the body of Grendol.
Upon calling Irelius as a witness, the prisoner began to be obstructive to the process by challenging Kalis' comments. After a few confusing war of words, Irelius did admit to having attacked Grendol before. Finally, in his statements to the court, Kalis read a statement from Evangeline regarding the future plans of Irelius. Apparently, Irelius had threatened others as well and after planned to murder Grendol. Upon making these statements, Kalis completed his testimony.
After Irelius could not find Othento as a witness, Kalis was permitted to call a late witness, the Legio recruit Ibios. Ibios gave testimony to back up the charges against the criminal. Ibios stated he saw Irelius dragging the corpse of Grendol away from the building of Leda and Cassius. When asked about the matter of the corpse, Irelius stated he was taking Grendol to the Hospice. But within an hour, a brawler named Praxum discovered the corpse of Grendol at the boulder. Upon these statements, the prosecution rested.
Afterward, Steps Justice Mortarian Santum called Othento as a witness for Irelius. Othento stated that he and Anahstas disposed the body of Grendol at the pyres. The body seemed petrified enough to burn— seemingly, it was a few days old already. Othento was not certain of the wounds upon the corpse. Othento stated that the wounds were in line with what a cestus user could do. Irelius argued with the witness regarding the body's state. He stressed that the corpse must have been out in the open longer than time permitted for him to kill Grendol. The time line did not fit the ability of a freshly killed corpse to deteriorate so fast.
At this point, Justice Santum allowed Constable Kalis to cross-exam Othento. Under questioning from Kalis, Othento stated he is not an expert in body decomposition. That he also took notice of the corpse because others had seen the corpse and not done anything about it. But under the questioning of the constable, Othento stated, he believed Irelius did in fact kill Grendol. With that, Kalis rested once again. Irelius called Breonna as his next witness.
Under questioning, Breonna stated that Irelius seemed to be rather quick to violence in certain matters. She stated that Grendol tended to get under the skin of the accused rather well. Breonna mentioned as a gladiator that she blood sparred with Grendol on a few occasions. Breonna acknowledged that she believed Irelius murdered Grendol as well.
Irelius had no more witnesses to call. In his closing statement, Kalis stated that four persons claimed to have seen the Cineran Irelius commit the murder of a citizen of the Republic and argued that, as an example, the prisoner should be executed.
In his long closing statement, Irelius stated once again that he did not kill Grendol. He stated several persons had reason to do so. He was one of them. But that half the city wanted Grendol dead. The prisoner questioned the evidence against him. He questioned the tactics of the constable during the trial. At that, Justice Santum has a short consideration.
In conclusion, Foreign Justice Mortarian Santum found the prisoner guilty of the murder of the citizen Grendol Sigma and sentenced him to immediate death. While the condemned murderer attempted to plead how and when he would be killed, he was escorted to the city Forum podium and executed by the Legio. Today, his headless body is now hanging near the Vetallun Legio fort as a testimony and warning to others.

Dryantilla

Date: 3rd day of Allinius, 235th Year of the Republic
Seated: Celeres Illryia
Accused: Dryantilla
Accuser: Trisidius, on behalf of the Iridine Constables
Brief Summary: Repeat offender charged with multiple counts of assault and theft. Fined fifteen talents payable to one of the accused's victims, and sentenced to ten public lashings and enslavement as a gladiator for an exhibition death match.
Detailed Summary:
On the 3rd day of Allinius, 235th Year of the Republic, Assistant Justice Celeres Illryia held the trial of a foreigner from Altene, Dryantilla.
The prisoner Dryantilla was assisted by Verrucosis. Constable Trisidius presented evidence as the accusing constable. Dryantilla was accused of being a dangerous repeat offender and putting a citizen healer named Valten into a coma.
In his opening testimony, Trisidius reviewed some of the warrants upon the prisoner. The warrants were for assault of various persons living in the city. Constable Trisidius detailed how each assault became more violent than the previous one. Warranting of Dryantilla began with Disturbing the Peace but gradually became more serious. The accusing counsel provided a long list of recorded crimes. Sai was assaulted in the Colosseum. Jerrell claimed hne was knocked unconscious by her. Dryantilla knocked out a man during a spar in Leda's dojo near the Toga. The forester, Wild, claimed continual aggression from Dryantilla. A person named Oakke mentioned how Dryantilla assaulted his dog. These were crimes all committed before the attempted murder of the healer, Valten.
Concerning the attempted murder, Trisidius mentioned a witness named Seric. Seric claimed he had seen Dryantilla standing over Valten's comatose body at the hospice. At this time, Valten still had his armor, but was covered in bruises and Dryantilla had a quarterstave in her hands.
Trisidius called one witness to the podium, Breonna Valyd. Breonna witnessed and detailed a conversation between Valten and the accused after he recovered from his coma. Valten charged that Dryantilla had stolen several of his items and did not return them. Breonna also claimed to have seen an attack upon another person not reported to the constabulary.
Trisidius did wish to call Sai as a witness but he could not attend the trial. At this point, the prosecutor did not call another witness. Assistant Justice Illryia turned to accused to defend against these charges.
After a few polite remarks, Verrucosis desired to call Seric as a witness, but he was not present. Verrucosis then called the accused Altene, Dryantilla to testify in her defense. As questioned by Verrucosis, Dryantilla began to fight against the testimony of Seric. She claimed that Seric put a charge against her due to her own testimony against a certain Equart. Equart is the brother of Seric, and was charged with the murder of a guard. She argued Seric placed a false charge against her in retaliation for her testimony against his brother.
Next Verrucosis and Dryantilla tried to stain the reputation of the constable Trisidius. They hinted that the relationship between Trisidius, Breonna and Valten was protective. They implied that the arrest and criminal charges against Dryantilla came from that relationship. However, Justice Illryia cut short that line of questioning. He told the accused counsel to move on in his defense.
Next, Verrucosis attempted to show that Dryantilla was always goaded by others to defend herself. Dryantilla mentioned harassment from Wild and Oddr upon her person. Afterwards, Dryantilla claimed she submitted peacefully to the constabulary.
Finally Verrocusis questioned Dryantilla about the theft of Valten's items. She denied it all. Dryantilla claimed she did attack persons in the past, but that those days are behind her. She indicated ashamed disgust with herself.
Upon this, final statements began. In his closing statement, constable Trisidius claimed that the assaults of Dryantilla have become worse of late and that she has lied to the constabulary and that "she has been bullying people for too long."
To summarize the evidence, Trisidius stated, "On the 5th day of Invex in the 235th Year of the Republic, Dryantilla walked into the hospice, knocked a citizen named Valten into a coma and then took any armor, weapons or money she thought fit to help herself to. She is of no doubt a constant menace. When her crimes first began, they were against property of some people, and minor assault crimes. Later, she turned to major assaults, knocking out her victims or crippling them. Now, she has turned to comatosing good, honest, hard working citizens of this city. Valten did nothing to her. He heals people for a living and rarely leaves the hospice."
In a final statement, the constable said, "Her crimes have scaled upwards in severity and the next step up from her attempted murder is the actual murder of a person, possibly a citizen. This must be stopped now, while it can still be stopped, in order to save the city future pain and suffering."
In his closing statement, Verrucosis attempted to invalidate the testimony of the arrest reports upon Dryantilla. He laid claim that many of the reports were inconsistent with what really happened. Verrucosis once again repeated the charge that the constable Trisidius was corrupted by his relationship with the healer, Valten. He mentioned that the testimony of Seric was invalid due to the relationship with Equart. The accused's counsel argued, "Dryantilla knocked Seric out due to a deliberate and violent attack against her." Verrucosis indicated that he would have done the same himself in such a situation.
Finally, Verrucosis stated that "Dryantilla is ashamed of her prior actions. Her temporary lapses of temper that resulted in her striking a person one time, on two or three occasions. She has even given her word - the word of an Altene. She will not act in that manner again." At this, Verrocusis rested. The court was adjourned for the verdict and the court had a short recess.
In his final verdict, Assistant Justice Illryia declared, "Despite the counsel of the accused's spirited attempts to defend her, the evidence is quite overwhelming to her guilt. The amount of evidence is still prodigious. The long list of crimes reported, and the fact that at least one was not, does validate the accuser's statement of her being a repeat criminal who could very well pose a danger to society in the future. However, the accused begs for a chance to show she will change."
Assistant Justice Illryia fined the prisoner fifteen talents to compensate the attacked healer. When she did not have that amount, he declared that her items were be awarded to Valten. In addition, the accused was sentenced to ten lashes. Finally, Dyrantilla was ordered to fight an opponent of the Assistant Steward's choosing at the next Games. As quoted, "If you win, you will go free. Otherwise, you will die on the sands."
The gallery of the courtroom became very excited upon hearing this sentence with many persons obviously wanting to see the criminal punished harshly for her crimes and the prisoner's counsel seemed shocked by the level of sentencing.
The lashing was carried out by constable Trisidius and the prisoner was returned to a Station I jail cell to await her chance in the Colosseum.

Kalewyr

Date: 22nd day of Lucifal, 235th Year of the Republic
Seated: Meletia Sthelenos
Accused: Kalewyr
Accuser: Trisidius, on behalf of Aestas
Brief Summary: Held on charges of larceny for robbing an inn room. Accused was able to produce some of the stolen materials and was sentenced to enslavement with the proceeds of sale as a slave to be awarded to the legion and constables.
Detailed Summary:
On the morning of the 22nd day of Lucifal in the 235th Year of the Republic, Assistant Justice Meletia Sthelenos brought the Cineran, Kalewyr, to trial over a case of larceny at the Harbor Courthouse. Constable Trisidius prosecuted the case. The prisoner Kalewyr defended himself.
After things were set, constable Trisidius set forth the opening statement. He thanked Justice Sthelenos for quickly setting up this trial and started into his opening statement.
"The case today, is pretty straight forward. The accused has admitted to looting the room of Aestas. He stole over one hundred talents worth of items and has shown no remorse. The constabulary can really only be happy with suggesting a term in slavery for the accused. As far as we are aware, he has not handed back any of the items, has threatened to discard them and has evaded capture. Due to the amount of items stolen Kalewyr's punishment should be severe. I'm sorry for the lack of substance in my statement, but I was not allowed time to prepare. Thank you for hearing me out, Justice."
After indicating familiarity with the case, Justice Meletia Sthelenos asked Kalewyr for an opening statement.
Kalewyr declared, "I've served my time once for this crime. Then again, and then again moreover I was chased down in the city by an officer of the legion. Out of his jurisdiction, I might add. Attacked, even. I think the entire premise of punishing criminals with a free hand, away from the twelve tables, is a mockery of all this city stands for."
Requested to call his first witness, constable Trisidius called Aestas to testify. In her testimony under questioning by both Justice Sthelenos and constable Trisidius, Aestus declared she lost a low estimate of one hundred talents in lost property. She explained Kalewyr and she were seeing each other approximately for six month after an initial friendship. She confessed that Kalewyr proposed marriage within that relationship.
Aestas seemed confused as to the source of the crime's motive. She contributed that both she and Kalewyr were under a deal of stress during the time of frequent Cineran attacks in Vetallun and the Traevant forest. Aestus added that she made attempts to recover her stolen property but other than a cadae and a pair of boots, nothing was returned. She stated that Kalewyr declared that once Vecerin was dead, she would have all her property back.
The prosecuting Constabulary did not call another witness so Assistant Justice Meletia Sthelenos requested Kalewyr to call his own. Kalewyr did not call a witness but asked to comment on Aestas' testimony. This was allowed under further examination by Justice Sthelenos.
As for a reason for the crime Kalewyr stated that, "Vecerin threatened my life, so I returned the favor." Being reminded that Vecerin has nothing to do with this crime or with Aestas, Kalewyr disagreed. Kalewyr rebutted that "Aestas works for him." He further mentioned that his "anger towards her was a personal vendetta."
Justice Meletia Sthelenos reminded the prisoner that he showed no remorse. She also disagreed with the accused's opinion that his time served for the crime was sufficient, considering he stole talents upon talents of property and returned none of it. Further commenting Assistant Justice Sthelenos stated, "Slavery is a common punishment for debt."
"If you cannot pay a debt, you are sold to pay off your debt."
Kalewyr attempted to argue that his arrest was illegal due to the fact that a Legio soldier tricked him and captured him within the city limits. However, Assistant Justice Sthelenos would have none of that. She stated, "I am certainly not going to let a criminal off because of a technicality in his capture. That would violate the spirit of my authority here. If you wish, apply to the Tribune to complain about the soldier."
At this point, constable Trisidius suggested, "He may actually be made to pay twice the stolen properties value, if the court wishes it, as stated in the twelve tables, ma'am."
After further examination and threats to make Kalewyr a slave gladiator in the Colosseum as a judgment, Kalewyr agreed to return the missing items to Aestas.
Having been asked where the items were, he declared, "Vetallun, the Steps, Seneda's, and the swamps."
After a discussion with several members of the Legio, Justice Sthelenos sent the prisoner under guard with constable Iason and several Legio soldiers to recover the stolen property for return to Aestas.
Kalewyr recovered enough of the Aestas' stolen property to satisfy her and Justice Sthelenos sentenced Kalewyr into slavery with the proceeds of the sale to benefit both the Legio and the Constables.

Evanix

Date: 235th Year of the Republic
Seated: Galucus Auila
Accused: Evanix Sempronus Vaestrus
Accuser: Phytias, on behalf of the Iridine Constables
Brief Summary: Foreigner accused of major assault and mudering a citizen. Sentenced to two additional months in prison, a fine of seventy-five talents and twelve public lashings.
Detailed Summary:
In the 235th Year of the Republic, Assistant Justice Galucus Auila brought to trial the case of a Cineran, Evanix Sempronus Vaestrus. He was arrested for a murder of a citizen named Kerlat and a serious attack upon a foreigner named Rizion inside the Steps District of the city.
Phytias brought the charges against the prisoner on behalf of the constabulary. The accused was defended by a woman named Breonna. Several notable personages were present to observe the case including Celeres Illryia, Adipus Vestrunius, Galas Lestas Flavius, Tertiana Gordia, Meletia Sthelenos, and Laphus Nicatian.
After stating the formal charge against the foreigner Evanix, Assistant Justice Galucus Auila called for the opening statements from the counselors.
Phytias opened by stating the case against Evanix. He used the occasion to make some rather extended statements about the fact that Evanix was a Cineran. Part of his opening statement referred to the fact that Evanix was acting as a vigilante against Steps crime. Afterward, Breonna spoke on behalf of the accused. She began by thanking the Justice and the court. Her remarks pointed to mistakes made by the constabulary. She referred to an indication that the testimony of Rizion was not totally factual.
Upon the ending of the opening statements, Assistant Justice Auila called Phytias for his witnesses. He called several witnesses and questioned them laboriously. He called to the stand former constable Kylaira, the accused Evanix, and as a final witness he called Karagoth. After an initial period of questioning Assistant Justice Galucus Auila personally questioned Kylaira for clarification of testimony.
From her statements, it appeared the following occurred. A person by the name of Interitus heard Kerlat and Rizion crying out in thoughts that they were locked in a Step's room. Interitus informed a constable recruit, Mystikqua, who then contacted Kylaira. Kylaira investigated the kidnapping. She apparently went to the room and spoke with both Kerlat and Rizion. She could not gain entrance nor unlock the door to let them out. Both persons claimed they had been knocked unconscious by a fox faceplated man and locked in the room. For several days, Kylaira claimed that several constables attempted to gain access to the room but failed. However, as she was with a few persons to attempt again, she beheld a man in a fox faceplate and another man in a hood rush by. This time she was able to enter the room. Kylaira found Rizion in a coma but no corpse of Kerlat. Once Rizion awoke, he claimed that the description and skills of the man who attacked him matched Evanix. Kylaira commented there was a period of time between the imprisonment of Kerlat and Rizion and the assault upon them. Thus, Evanix was arrested for the charge. His personal items also matched the murdered of Kerlat.
After the testimony of Kylaira, Phytias called Evanix to the stand as a witness. Under questioning, Evanix claimed to have known both Kerlat and Rizion well enough to be recognized by them. Calling his final witness, Phytias called Karagoth. The testimony of Karagoth basically matched Kylaira's affidavit.
Upon this the prosecutor rested and Breonna began her defense of the accused, Evanix. Her first act was to call the Constable Legate, Laphus Nicatian to the witness stand. Evanix was a client of the Constable Legate.
Laphus Nicatian provided his statement to the court, "As Constable Legate, I have full access to the constable's official reports…. And while no report can cover everything, there are some inconsistencies with the testimony that Kylaira gave and what she said in her reports. On the 25th day of Rindak, Kylaira reported that she heard about the attacks on Rizion and Kerlat. For the most part her report matches what was said in the court however she gives a full description of the man in the fox faceplate, but for the man in the mask she says only that he was a man with kinky black hair and a whip. It's not until the 1st day of the following festival after Rizion had recovered from his coma and she'd spoken with him that she gives a full description of the man with the mask. The only other relevant piece of information that I have is that on the night that Kylaira called for Lorican's assistance, I was awake and heard her ask, and I was also sitting in my atrium having a conversation with Evanix at the time, I remember it well, because it was the same day I asked Meletia to drop the charge against Lorican. Not to my knowledge, though I did mention the meeting to Meletia while we were discussing the Lorican case. It is mentioned in the official constable records, I suppose Kylaira neglected to provide you with those? Shara is the one that took my statement; I did not make the record myself."
Upon the completion of the statement by Constable Legate Laphus Nicatian, Breonna called the accused to make a statement. In his remarks, Evanix said that he would not presume to add anything to the word of the Legate, but he reinforced his deepest respect and love for the Republic, its law and the constables who enforce them. His one complaint was the person of Kylaira. The defendant accused her of ignoring to file reports, and releasing criminals.
During the long testimony phase of the trial, Assistant Justice Galucus Auila continued to gather evidence as to the events surrounding the accused.
Kylaira mentioned that the statement of the Legate together with his client Evanix at the time of the murder was in question by Justice Tertiana Gordia. After viewing the evidence before passing the case to Galucus Auila, Justice Gordia thought perhaps it was a conflict of interest due to the Legate's position as well as his relationship to the accused. Kylaira further clarified, that the statement did not cover the entire time that the men were locked in the room.
Further evidence came from the person who actually rented the room where the crime took place, Tamora. Tamora was the renter of the room before, during and after the incident. Upon finding Tamora, Tamora claimed to have been knocked unconscious by Rizion and Kerlat and her keys were stolen. As a recruit of the same gladiatorial stable as Evanix, she believes that they went to her room to loot. She mentioned that she did not report the matter of the attack upon her person to the constabulary.
Directly after the attacks Constable Auril witnessed the fox faceplated man drop off a papyrus that stated "Room lootings will not be tolerated against those under watch, that those and any who would help them would be … frowned upon, Watch your step."
Rizion testified, "Me and my friend Kerlat made a mistake in judgement…we did a bad thing to a recruit of Evanix's gladiator group. We had hoped she would have the armor that they wore. We knocked her out and made our way to her room. A man in a fox faceplate attacked us both, I woke in a room with a few men standing over us— the man with the faceplate, and a new man with a mask with feathers over it. They told us not to look at them, but I did anyway. I was scared. They told us we shouldn't loot rooms and began to beat Kerlat…they killed him before me…the man with the whip hit him over and over they meant to kill him…there was no doubt. I recognized the man with the whip; I had seen him in the games. I had seen him in town. He wore a mask his hair was visible to me…I knew in my heart it was him. I thought out for help…then they were on me. I woke a few days later from a deep coma. Kerlat was a bastard…but he didn't deserve to die."
At the end of the testimonial phase, Assistant Justice Galucus Auila took a short recess to consider the evidence in the case. Upon his return, he gave the following judgment.
"I have a reached a verdict in the case. A difficult verdict. I must admit, there are some inconsistencies in the testimonies, both for the prosecution and the accused. However, that being said, I don't believe the accused offered sufficient evidence for his innocence in this crime. The description of the event by many of the witnesses is rather damning, and I therefore find Evanix guilty of the crime of murder. His punishment for said crime will be two more months in prison, a seventy-five talent fine, and a dozen public lashings. The verdict is final, and the lashings will be given immediately. If you cannot afford this fine, Evanix, you will be forced to serve a longer prison sentence."
Evanix indicated that he could pay the fine and was abruptly lashed. Afterward, he was stripped and taken to prison to complete his sentence.

Milizinivi

Date: 25th day of Scran, 240th Year of the Republic
Seated: Meletia Sthelenos
Accused: Milizinivi
Accuser: Iason, on behalf of the Iridine Constables and Ibios, on behalf of Legio I
Brief Summary: Accused bandit charged on multiple counts of assault of officials, attempted murder and concealment held in absentee. Sentenced to life imprisonment in a public cage.
Detailed Summary:
On the afternoon of the 25th day of Scran 240 Year of the Republic, Assistant Harbor Justice Meletia Sthelenos held the trial of the bandit criminal Milizinivi. It was a short affair over by nightfall the same day. Charges against the accused were numerous. These included assault upon officials, attempted murder, concealment, and many other serious charges both by the Legio and the Constabulary.
With Assistant Justice Sthelenos presiding, the accusers were Constable Iason and Legio Optio Ibios. The prisoner would not awaken for his own trial. Nevertheless, the trial went forward. The accused criminal had not arranged for a court counsel to speak on his behalf. Notables attending the trial included Infiniti, Sanna, Ansgar, Hypnoticus, Thyrn, Zemis, and Ghuan.
With preliminaries taking care of Constable Iason began his statement with Milizinivi is a "tale of blatent disrespect for the law." Assistant Harbor Justice Sthelenos made it clear she wanted to hear "particularly conveyed charges of assault upon officials and theft of public property" during the trial's proceedings. After Constable Iason spoke, Optio Ibios was called as the first witness to provide evidence against the accused.
In his testimony, the Legio Optio stated that in the guise of the grinning skull he attacked citizens on Vetallun Road for several months. The Legio had taken special pains to capture him. Milizinivi used a crying child faceplate to loot a grinning skull faceplate worn by Ruine Reynus. It was in the crying child guise in which he was captured on the night of the 21st of Ereal, 240th Year of the Republic.
The circumstances of the capture were outlined. Optio Ibios heard a Darthus call for assistance upon Vetallun Road. Thereupon, he found Darthus unconscious with the crying child faceplated man over him. He brought Darthus to safety. Afterward, he met up with Centurion Seppoko. They searched the Traevant forest and ran into the crying child helmed man. Upon capture, Centurion Seppoko and Optio Ibios removed the faceplate, revealing Milizinivi. Milizinivi was bandaged and taken into Legio custody. The other crimes reported were then matched with the recovered faceplate.
After Optio Ibios's testimony, Constable Iason handed over to the Assistant Harbor Justice various statements from those assaulted by the accused criminal. These statements were not few and reflected a wide range of personages in the Republic. The Accusers rested their case against Milizinivi.
When asked, no one in the gallery came to speak on behalf of the absent criminal. Therefore, the Assistant Justice gave her verdict.
In her final judgment, she stated, "The first time I saw the accused was during the trial of another bandit named Tigrus. Milizinivi attempted to assist Tigrus to escape. Perhaps if the accused was dealt with then, we would in all likelihood not be here today. How can this man be made to serve the public good? He will be placed in a cage in the public forums for the remainder of his life. He will subsist solely in whatever offal the people of the Republic choose to toss to him. The brigand becomes beggar, the bandit becomes buffoon."

Andrew, Aestus

Date: 8th day of Invex, 241st Year of the Republic
Seated: Lucius Sulla
Accused: Andrew, Aestus
Accuser: Trisidius, on behalf of the Iridine Constables
Brief Summary: Repeat offenders tried for multiple previous offenses, including assault and possession of contraband. Both sentenced to execution.
Detailed Summary:
On the evening of the 8th of Invex in the 241st Year of the Republic, Justice Lucius Sulla proceeded over the trial of Andrew and Aestus at the Forum Courthouse.
Both were tried for past crimes as well as new ones. The trial came after the accused reportedly attacked several residents in the city and using concealment faceplates during the attacks. The faceplates assaulted Xia, Ulath, Lilius, Balinor, Esabella, and a few others over a period of several Iridine months. The accused were arrested while attacking Erida and Kyi in Marcavia's shop. Both Andrew and Aestus were arrested having the faceplates in their possession, which matched the ones involved in the assaults in the city.
Station I constable Trisidius presented the case on behalf of the accuser. Andrew and Aestus elected to defend themselves.
After clarification by Justice Lucius Sulla, Trisidius called his first witness, a person named Tenaius. Tenaius stated, "I was primary witness to the last assault they did, the one they were apprehended for." Despite being mocked by the accused, his testimony held. Trisidius called for the testimony of Station I Captain Kalis.
In brief, Kalis said, "I rushed to the area when I heard the two faceplates were attacking yet another person. Andrew then submitted to his charges and was arrested and when his belongings were searched we found the faceplate. The other faceplate was taken from Aestus. There are numerous witnesses including three constables who saw them there." In retort, Justice Lucius Sulla remarked, "I read the report." He, then stated, "Accused may question the Captain."
Andrew began to ask a series of questions unrelated to the case before the court. This brought about a series of irrelevant answers from the present constables. His intent seemed to be to draw attention away from his own crimes to the faults or failings of others.
Interrupting the ramblings of the accused, Justice Lucius Sulla declared, "We ask you keep your questions relevant to the case being discussed."
Finally, Andrew chuckled, and stated defiantly, "Whatever you wish to do, Lucius, does not scare Andrew. Andrew fears nothing. Death does not bother Andrew. I am the last great citizen of this country. Where is the leadership in this Republic? Where are the heroes, I ask you? Where are they? They are gone. This is a nation without good men. I've killed. I've pillaged. I've looted. All in the name of Iridine. All for the Republic. The Republic I am a citizen for… Whatever you wish to do, Lucius, does not scare Andrew. Andrew fears nothing. Death does not bother Andrew. I am the last great citizen of this country. For at the end of the day, Andrew's contributions to the city are more than anyone. Without Andrew, the city is a boring, dull place. Let it be so." Andrew said, "I'm done."
At the end of the long statement Justice Lucius Sulla concluded, "With the evidence given, the testimony heard, and all past deeds taken into account…. This court must rule that the Accused, Aestus and Andrew, be executed for their crimes. And may Ereal have mercy on their souls. This court is done. Ereal guide all your steps, and remind you life is no small thing to be wasted."
Constable Captain Kalis asked about when and where the execution was to take place. The sitting Justice declared upon the Forum podium with the addition, "Any who interfere with the execution of these two men will suffer the same fate."
Upon the Forum podium, several persons tried to free the condemned. Danasei freed the accused from their bonds but was taken down and arrested for treason. Another, an Alterna, was knocked unconscious as well. She was executed for her part in trying to free the condemned. Several others attempted and got stiff warnings from the constabulary.
After much delay, Aestus was eventually knocked down upon the Podium. With the words, "let this be a lesson to those who flout the law, it will end on the podium." Aestus was beheaded. Andrew was rearrested and returned to the podium, where he was strangled and beheaded. Later their corpses were taken to the pyres.
Danasei was later taken to the podium on his charge of Treason, but was freed by Godo. Godo and Danasei eventually both received a reprieve for their interference.

From the seat of the Justice, Gnaina Medicus says, "I will accept that as a formal confession to your crimes."
Let the record show that Nivia nodded agreement.

From the seat of the Justice, Gnaina Medicus asks, "Do you understand your sentence as I have explained?"
From a low wooden counter labeled 'Accused', Nivia asks, "One thing ma'am. If I leave the Steps alone and enter the city, what punishment is there?"
From the seat of the Justice, Gnaina Medicus asks, "If you break any portion of this sentence, you will be brought back to trial. Do you fancy being caged like an animal?"

Let the record show Dumond nods.
From the seat of the Justice, Gnaina Medicus says, "If she is found to have committed a crime while your servant, you will be fined five talents and your ownership rights will be revoked and she will be remanded back to this court for a formal trial."
From the seat of the Justice, Gnaina Medicus asks, "Do you understand your responsibilities?"
From a low wooden counter labeled 'Accused', Dumond says, "Yes, I understand."

Milizinivi

Date: 8th day of Aera, 244th Year of the Republic
Seated: Franciscan Adrianus
Accused: Milizinivi
Accuser: Corvous, on behalf of the Iridine Constables
Brief Summary: Repeat offender and convicted bandit retried after escaping life imprisonment in a public cage. Charged with continued criminal activity within city limits and sentenced to a
branding, public lashing, fine of up to a hundred and fifty talents or the full contents of his bank account to be paid to victim Ruine, and a forfeit belongings currently in constable custody. Prohibited from carrying a weapon on his person within the city limits.
Detailed Summary:
On the 8th day of Aera in the 244th Year of the Republic, the second trial of Milizinivi was held by Assistant Justice Franciscan Adrianus. Constables present at the trial were Kyi, Kalis, Kurtus, and Corvous. Legio soldiers present were Optio Dackel, Rizer, Hephaiston, and Kerpel. In addition, other notables present were Brutyl, Breonna, Tug, Saben, Dumond, Avangeline, Ulath, Dayltor, Dracuul, and Canyon.
The chief prosecuting constable at the trial was newly promoted Sergeant Corvous. Cyrillicus acted as a counsel for the prisoner, Milizinivi.
Opening the trial, Cyrillicus made the following statement, "In the interest of expedience, let it be known that the accused does not deny the charges against him. He expresses his sincere remorse and asks the court's mercy. He has committed no murder, nor treason, and asks only that the court be just in its treatment of a citizen of poor circumstance. I would like to, if I may, point out the lengthy jailtime he has already served as well as the physical punishment he has endured up to this point. Though, of course, he will stoically accept the judgment of the court. That is all, Justice. I hoped to save us time, not demonstrate my speaking ability."
After an agreement, both the accused counsel and the presiding Justice accepted this as the accused's opening statement.
With this, the prosecuting constable began to present his opening remarks.
Sergeant Corvous began, "I am here today, Justice, to show the court the repeated unwillingness to follow the laws of Iridine. I am here today, Justice, to show the court the repeated unwillingness to follow the laws of Iridine. Milizinivi has formed one of the longest arrest records I have ever seen in my professional career. He has been arrested for 67 different counts, by both Station I and XI, as well as the Legio I. Milizinivi has compiled such a lengthy list in only the past 2 years. He has shown his disregard for common respect of the members of this republic, Foreigner and official alike. And even after a sentence was laid upon him in a previous trial, he willingly escaped punishment and continued his assault on innocent residents of the Republic. He has suffered some time in the jail, but not nearly as much pain as he's caused those he attacked. Both in their physical wounds, and their personal belongings." Upon ending his statement, Constable Sergeant Corvous sat down.
In response to these two statements, Assistant Justice Francisian Adrianus remarked from his desk, "I am presiding over this trial today not simply for Milizinivi's recent actions, but to review his entire criminal history and his previous trial as well." Thereupon, Justice Adrianus requested the constabulary to begin presenting their evidence.
Corvous began by quoting a list of crimes committed by the prisoner from the 5th of The Festival of Morning, in the 243rd Year of the Republic up until the 23rd of Lucifal in the 244th Year of the Republic. After these were listed into the record, he called a Legionary recruit, Ruine, as a witness. Ruine clearly stated how a disguised Milizivini had attacked him three times.
Next, Corvous spoke of the criminal's role in the freeing of the condemned prisoner, Tigrus. Third, the Sergeant gave statements regarding the prisoner's "total lack of respect to those who enforce the laws of this City."
When pressed on the nature of these charges, Corvous added, "Milizinivi has attacked constables and legionaries alike. He has assaulted them within the city's walls, as well as outside the city. According to the legion's testimony, Milizinivi had assaulted both their recruits and their legionaries in the area of the large boulder along Vetallun Road. He had also attacked constable Avangeline, both while she was a recruit and while she was a station constable. The first encounter happened by the junk dealer. At this point Milizinvi was wearing the grinning skull faceplate that he had stolen from Ruine and knocked Avangeline unconscious. He then took her lead medallion…."
Furthermore, Corvous called constable Kurtus to testify regarding assaults upon city officials. Constable Kurtus recounted that, "I was sparring, getting a little practice in at Leda's training dojo when a man in a faceplate came in, guarded the door, and then started attacking me. It was a faceplate that looked like a ox, I believe. I have a more detailed report of it with the report I filed, but it was quite a while ago. I immediately called for all constables to come to Leda's. At that point, he stopped the attack, and ran. I walked outside at that point, and saw the accused standing right outside the door of the dojo. It was this point that I thought aloud that Milizinivi had attacked me… "
Finally, Corvous gave this statement of evidence against the prisoner, "I would like to show the court is Milizinivi's attempts at the most violent of crimes, murder… on the 3rd of Lucifal, in the 239th Year of the Republic, Milizinivi had attacked Armataan beyond unconsciousness, so bad that he was sent into a coma. He had done this over an argument Aramataan had with Hypnoticus. He apparently wanted to take a side and proceeded to attack… on that same day, Milizinivi had then beaten Gabrik and Dalis into comas while they hunted in the dumps. He proceeded to loot them then and then he knocked recruit Avangeline unconscious and looted her medallion when she came to aid him."
After some discussion concerning the citizenship of the victims, Assistant Justice Franciscan Adrianus asked Cyrillicus to begin his defense.
Cyrillicus said, "As I said in the beginning, the accused does not deny the crimes against him. However, the accusers have failed to list many actual crimes."
Afterward he requested Legionary recruit Ruine back to the stand. Cyrillicus spent his time questioning Ruine as to the exact nature of the crimes of Milizivini.
He called the present Editor Ludorum to the stand who stated, "There have been troubles in the past, Assistant Justice, of confusion over the crossover between law of the street and the application of that law within the Colosseum. Two rules of which I am most assuredly certain on are that placing a warrant for assault or concealment past the guardsmens areas in the basement of the Colosseum are undeniably illegal. These rules come directly from the Steward of the City, Carnidus Harythean and, as such, are beyond contestation."
Then Cyrillicus called and questioned Corvous as to the seriousness of the charges against his client.
Several times during the cross-examination, Constable Captain Kalis protested the nature of statements and other insinuations made by Milizivini's counsel, but he was not permitted to interrupt. After Cyrillicus finished with Corvous, Assistant Justice Franciscan Adrianus called for closing arguments.
The prosecution began by Constable Captain Kalis stating, "To begin with we're discussing this man's prior crimes, crimes another Justice has already ruled on. Milivinizi has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in a public cage for public amusement…he unfortunately escaped this fate and continued to lead a life of crime, he's made no effort to better himself, in fact he was arrested attacking yet another constable. He had his chance, he was free he could of ran away to another city, stayed low, he was free and clear, but he had to continue to threaten others, it's in the mans nature….before I turn things over to constable Corvous I also need to clarify to small points…attempted murder applies to citizens and non citizens alike…and all crimes within the city are illegal, even in the basement of the Colosseum, we usually ignore it as we have better things to do, but if the Senator were murdered in the Colosseum basement for example, you can be damned sure my men would be investigating it…those were the orders I was given when I asked the Senate to clarify such matters, sir."
Sergeant Corvous took over and said further, "The accused shows no remorse in his actions. I could see if he had only minor charges or only a major crime here or there, but the Accused has shown disregard for the laws and continues to live a life of crime till the moment he was caught. He is unchangeable even after getting away. The only thing he regrets is that he was caught. I would bet that if given an opportunity to escape, he would continue with his actions, his assaults on foreigners and citizens alike. He has been blatant in his attacks against officials and it is only a matter of time before he strikes against a member of the first class of Iridine. His mind has been set. His manners have been chosen with no sight of recovery. His warrant and arrest history is one of the largest compiled in the history of our station. The city is unsafe until the last breath of Milizinivi has been taken. He has already escaped judgment once and continued his path."
After this Assistant Forum Justice Franciscan Adrianus declared, "Thank you, Corvous. Your closing statement, Cyrillicus?"
Cyrillicus stated, "First, I would like to take the opportunity to thank Corvous for his diligent pursuit of Iridine's criminals. So diligent, that he has little time for the minor things in life. Such as reading reports, or correctly naming charges on arrest records. Clearly he is quite intent on seeing a man put to death today for a long record of 'jailtime' and spitting on sidewalks. No, Milizinivi is not a good man. He, as I said, does not deny the crimes he is accused of. However, much of what the accusers put forth have not been crimes, or they've not been accusing Milizinivi. The honorable accuser would have this Citizen condemned to death without hesitation for crimes he might one day commit…I have transcribed the twelve tables once or twice, but have not seen that charge. Milizinivi stands now as he did at the trials start, repentant and willing to pay for those actual crimes he stands guilty of. But let us not give in to wanton cruelty. Let Iridine's justice be both swift and even handed."
With that, Franciscan Adrianus departed to consider his verdict. Upon his return he provided his lengthy summation from the justice seat.
"I will then pronounce my judgment in the case of Milizinivi Juvi, citizen of the Republic. As I stated at the beginning of this trial, this judgment applies to Milizinivi's entire criminal history. I chose to hear the original trial again, as is my right granted by section G of the fifth table of laws….was conducted by the Assistant City Justice of the Harbour, a lesser justice than the Assistant City Justice of the Forum…At this original trial the accused was not present, nor was his counsel. The accused has now been given a fair hearing. Milizinivi is found guilty of the crimes as follows:
He is guilty of twenty-one counts of disturbing the peace. He is guilty of fourteen counts of assault, eleven of which are major and three of which are minor. He is guilty of five counts of attempted murder. I wish to note that I have reviewed the law regarding attempted murder and have found a revision noting that it applies to foreigners as well as citizens. He is guilty of ten counts of larceny, totaling a value of over two hundred talents. He is guilty of two counts of concealment, and two counts of assault of an official. He is also guilty of one count of resisting arrest."
"A long list of crimes. Unfortunately, they are relatively minor crimes. He is -not- guilty of several crimes he has been accused of, however. This leaves us with Milizinivi having committed only one public crime, the theft of the constable medallion. The Twelve Tables state that a man can only be executed for committing a public crime. I am unwilling to execute Milizinivi, a citizen of the republic, for a simple theft of one small item."
"This leaves us with Milizinivi's private crimes. Milizinivi is guilty of repeated acts of personal harm and property crimes. The Twelve Tables state that a man can be incarcerated for up to one day per repeat offense of property crimes, and up to one month per repeat offense of personal harm crimes. This comes to a total of twenty months and eight days of jail time. Milizinivi, however, has served over two years in prison, as a citizen who was publicly humiliated in a cage."
"A repeat offender such as Milizinivi cannot simply be allowed to walk free, however. He has attacked constables and citizens repeatedly, and since his escape. However, can a man who is to be returned to a life of humiliation and imprisonment be persecuted for fighting for his freedom? We have a man who had been imprisoned without even being present at a trial, imprisoned for life."
"I therefore sentence Milizinivi to the following punishments: For repeated counts of larceny, he shall be branded upon the forehead with the Iridinian word for thief. For the public crime of theft of public property, he shall be lashed twenty times in front of the courthouse. For the theft of the faceplate, he shall be ordered by this court to pay a fine of up to a hundred and fifty talents, or the full contents of his bank account. If he is unable to reach that sum, he will also forfeit his belongings currently in constable custody. These fines shall be granted to Ruine as compensation for his loss. Finally, he shall be prohibited from carrying a weapon on his person within the city limits, with no exceptions. Milizinivi's freedom is contingent upon his taking of an oath to never bear arms inside this city or within a mile from its walls again. The breach of an oath against the Republic is considered Treason and will be prosecuted accordingly."
Assistant Justice Adrianus ordered Milizinivi to swear a solemn oath to the verdict. Upon the oath, the court was adjourned. The prisoner was branded, flogged, and set free according to the sentencing.
