Herbalism Guide
Below you'll find everything important to know about Herbalism.
In a Nutshell
Pros
- Easy to train anywhere. You can perform Plant Identification or Volume Estimation in most safe areas with minimal items, even while laying down in your room or the baths.
- Reputation-based lessons & items available.
Cons
- Many additional tools required for more advanced brewing (mortal & pestal, mixing bowl, fire, mixing stick, etc.)
- Ingredients go bad over time and will begin to mold as they near their expiry and disintegrate. Harvesting fresh plants regularly is required.
Advice & Tips
#Tools
Below are the types of tools possibly needed for brewing. Tools do not have to be in the character's hands when brewing (with the exception of water) as long as they are in your inventory or in the area with you, they are available for use.
For recipes that require water, the easiest way to make it available is to hold an open container of water in one hand.
Herbalism tools, including water, are not consumed upon use the way ingredients are.

Tasks
Foraging
- It is recommended to train and rank up the 3 foraging skills (Basic Foraging, Intermediate Foraging, Advanced Foraging) equally.
- If you look in the area first, you will get a better sense of the types of raw ingredients you can find.
#Brewing - Fundamentals
The cornerstone Herbalism is the ability to make useful products from ingredients, either foraged or purchased.
Brewing Fundamentals allows you to create drinks and such.
Ranks in the brewing skills (Fundamentals, Paint, Flask, Salve, Potion) dictate what types of products you can create.
Characters use the brew <container> command. The size of the container determines how much product will be made and the quantity of ingredients needed. For the purposes of the below chart, a mixing bowl will be assumed.
Notes on below tables
- *Ingredients Description quantity listed is based on a mixing bowl. If using a different sized container, multiply or divide the ingredient quantity using the 'Multiplier' column in the containers table. If division results in fractions of numbers, round down.

Moves
Worthwhile
- Foraging Skills (Basic Herb Foraging, Intermediate Herb Foraging, Advanced Herb Foraging) - Finding new ingredients for brewing.
- Brewing Skills (Fundamentals, Paint, Flask, Salve, Potion) - More brewing options.
Less useful
- Volume Estimation - Esimating volumes does not seem to have any purpose beyond informational. Recommended to keep at low ranks and raise only for training purposes.
- Plant Identification - While identifying plants does continue to provide information on newly foraged plants until rank 100, not being able to identify a plant does not prevent you from creating all the recipes or any other herbalism function.
Complementary Skill Sets
- Outdoor Survival - Clay foraging, fire building.
- Hunting - Crafting knives & hiding from wild animals while gathering ingredients.
