#Learning Languages
Studying Languages
Most languages are available to learn within the Library of Iridine (see above table for reference).
Learning a language is not (mechanically) difficult, but it can be a long and arduous pursuit. If you have poor mental stats, it can take many real-life months or even years to learn another language. [You are also limited to 20 languages lesson attempts per day, making this process more about daily routine.]
- Approach the desk attendant: Once inside the library, type app desk to approach the library attendant.
- Ask about your language of choice
- Ask the attendant about "languages" to learn what is offered. Or, tell him the name of the language you would like to study and he will escort you to a language tutor.
- The Library only teaches the "cultured" languages of Midlight, and you may learn about others during the course of your gameplay.
- Only 1 person can learn from a tutor at a time, it's possible the language tutor is busy with someone else and you would need to come back later or select another language.
- Study with your tutor: When you are with your language tutor, they will say a phrase and you will need to repeat it using the 'echo <tutor>' command to earn language SP. With enough practice, you will gain enough proficiency to rank up in the language.
- Skillpoint gain for languages is unlike other skills. You will automatically increase 1 rank in a language after you have earned 1 skill point for that practice.
- Reaching rank 50 means you are fluent in the language.
- Depart: Your tutor will conclude your lesson after you have had 20 lessons that (real-life) day. If you would like to leave early, tell your tutor "Let me out" or "I'm ready to leave".
- You can only attempt to learn from any tutor 20 times a (real-life) day. After that, they'll inform you that they've taught you all they can for the day and escort you out.
#Mastering Languages
Speaking languages requires at least 50 ranks in that language, but as you train you may be able to catch certain words of those around you speaking the language.
Those with high mental stats, such as Reasoning and Memory will have an easier time learning languages with lower overall successes.
Every attempt to echo your tutor will earn you language SP. How much is based on how much over, or under, your success you rolled in the attempt.
Roll Over Success | SP Gained |
---|---|
(failure) <= 0 | 0.005 |
1 - 30 | 0.150 |
31 - 40 | 0.100 |
41 - 69 | 0.050 |
76 - 80 | 0.030 |
81 - 90 | 0.020 |
91 - 95 | 0.010 |
Switching Languages
By default, every character in Midlight speaks in the common tongue. If you've mastered additional languages, you can speak and write in other tongues. Mastering a language means you've earned 50 ranks in that language, allowing you to speak and understand it fluently. If you have not mastered a language, you cannot speak it and you may only understand bits and pieces from someone speaking it.
Speaking Languages
To speak in a language type 'speak <language>'. To switch back to the common tongue (normal) type 'speak common'
Examples:
speak Iridinian
speak Altene
speak Steps
Writing in Languages
To write in a language, type 'write [ON] <what> [IN <language>]'.
#Rock Valley - Blackroot Teacher
Within the Town of Rock Valley lives the Blackroot language teacher.
Once outside the tutor's door:
- Knock on the door to enter.
- Only 1 person can learn from a tutor at a time, it's possible the language tutor is busy with someone else and you would need to come back later or select another language.
- Study with your tutor: When you are with a tutor, echo what he says ("echo man"). If you are successful, and with enough practice, you will gain some proficiency in the language.
- Skill point gain for languages is unlike other skills. You will automatically rank up in languages after you have earned 1 skill point from your practice.
- Depart: Your tutor will conclude your lesson after you have had 20 lessons that (real-life) day. If you would like to leave early, tell your tutor "Let me out" or "I'm ready to leave".
- You can only have 20 total lessons per day, regardless of which language you are studying.
#Monlon - Kelestian Healer
Within the Monlon Battlefield resides a happy Kelestian healer who speaks the Kelestian language as she heals, allowing you to glean certain amounts each day.
