Locksmithing Guide
Below you'll find everything important to know about Locksmithing.
In a Nutshell
Pros
- Easy to train anywhere. You can perform Lock Lore or even unlock things anywhere, even while laying down in your room or the baths.
- If your focus is just opening chests & coffers, you can get by with only a few critical skills, focusing on Unjam Lock and Study Lock.
Cons
- The journey to forging a flawless lockpick is long and will likely require rank 200/200 in Create Wax Imprint, Create Clay Mold & Forge Lock Instrument.
Advice & Tips
- Your lockpick quality will greatly affect your success to open containers, try to get at least a Very Spectacular lockpick to start with and avoid using store-bought lockpicks. (See the difference in Lockpicks)
- If an item can fit into a crucible, it can be melted down for forging. This includes lumps of metal, existing lockpicks, hair pins, etc.
- Many locksmithing actions, like unlocking, unjamming, or creating clay molds, are affected by the lighting of your environment. Make sure you are in a well-lit area to ensure that you have the lowest success for your actions.

#Lockpicks (& keys)
Lockpicks can be made of the following materials.
| Metals | Tin | Copper | Brass | Bronze | Iron | Silver | Alanti | Boison* |
|---|
*While Boison lockpicks have been seen in-game as custom items, they cannot be forged by player characters.
Higher quality lockpicks will make it easier to perform any skill that requires a lockpick. The quality of a lockpick can be determined by using the inspect command.
Below is the list of lockpick qualities that can be forged.
The RB Bonus listed, refers to how the quality of your lockpick will impact your success for skills such as Pick Lock-Locking, Pick Lock-Unlocking, Jam Lock & Unjam Lock.

Weight
The following lists the weight (in pounds) of various items, organized by material.
Note that keys which are added to a keyring become effectively weightless - the keyring will always weigh the same amount regardless of how many keys are on it.

Tasks
#Forging (Key | Lockpick)
- To make the best lockpick requires the best mold (good rolls).
- To make the best mold requires the best wax imprint (good rolls).
- Certain metals are easier to work with, allowing you to achieve a higher quality result with fewer ranks. Silver is the easiest metal to forge and will result in the highest quality product. In descending order of ease to work with after silver are: bronze, brass and tin (equal), copper, and finally iron - the hardest common metal to forge with.
- Gold cannot be forged. If you attempt to melt down a gold object, the game will prevent you from doing so, warning that gold slag would be too soft to form an effective key or lockpick.
Items Needed:
- Metal Slag - Lumps purchased from a shop (i.e. Apula's), or melted down from existing keys, hair pins, etc.
- Tongs - Used in melting the metal & heating the clay mold.
- Crucible - Used in melting the metal.
- Fuel - Most furnaces accept deadwood as fuel, but some - like the forge in Seld - require charcoal.
The below steps use the furnaces across from Apula's as the example.
| Step 1: Creating a wax imprint | - Make sure to have a piece of wax and the instrument inhand. - Imprint the wax with the instrument. (Create Wax Imprint) - Example: 'imprint wax with key'. - Repeat until finished. (# rolls vary on skill level) |
|---|---|
| Step 1-B (optional) : Etch Text into Imprint. | - Make sure to have a stylus inhand. - Etch characters onto the wax imprint. (Wax Letter Etching) - Example: 'etch imprint Home'. - See Etching for more details. |
| Step 2: Creating a clay mold. | - Hold the imprinted wax and a piece of clay in your hands. - Create a mold from the wax imprint. (Create Clay Mold) - Example: 'create mold of imprint with clay'. - Repeat until finished. (# rolls vary on skill level) |
| Step 3: Baking the clay mold. | - Bake the mold over the furnace. - Light the brick furnace for a low fire. - Make sure to hold a pair of tongs! - Heat the clay over the furnace. - Example: 'heat clay over brick' - Repeat until done. (~6 echoes) |
| Step 4: Getting liquid metal. | - Light the iron furnace for a strong fire. - Get a crucible and put a piece of metal slag inside. (your choice of metal!) - Hold the crucible and the tongs in hand, then heat the crucible over the furnace. - Example: 'heat crucible over iron furnace'. - Repeat until you have liquid metal. (~8 echoes) |
| Step 5: Forge the key/lockpick. | - Pour liquid metal into mold. (Forge Lock Instrument) - Example: 'forge tool with crucible and mold'. |
| Step 6 (optional): Destroy the mold. | - Destroy the mold so it cannot be used to create duplicates of the same key. - Example: 'crack mold'. |
#Etching
You can inscribe a small amount of characters onto a lockpick using Wax Letter Etching which will show when you look at it. Your rank in basics does not seem to help.
This lockpick has raised elegant lettering that reads, 'Awesome'.| Rank | # characters | lettering |
|---|---|---|
| 1 - 3 | 1 character | very crude lettering |
| 4 - 9 | 2 characters | very crude lettering |
| 10 - 19 | 4 characters | crude block lettering |
| 20 - 29 | 5 characters | crude block lettering |
| 30 - 39 | 6 characters | block lettering |
| 40 - 49 | 8 characters | clean lettering |
| 50 - 59 | 9 characters | slightly curling lettering |
| Rank | # characters | lettering |
|---|---|---|
| 60 - 69 | 10 characters | curling lettering |
| 70 - 79 | 10 characters | curling lettering |
| 80 | 12 characters | elegant lettering |
| 90 | 13 characters | elegantly scrolling lettering |
| 100 | 14 characters | elegantly scrolling lettering |
| 110 | 14 characters | elegantly scrolling lettering |
Create Wire Lockpicks
- Easier to master than forging.
- Wire metal does not seem to help.
- Lockpick quality deteriorates if you fail while trying to lock, unlock, unjam, etc.
Wire lockpicks can be made of the following material:
| Metals | Tin | Copper | Brass | Bronze | Iron | Silver |
|---|
Wire lockpick quality follows the same descriptors as forged lockpick quality.
Create Keyring
Keyrings are made by molding a thick length of wire. Higher skill creates better and larger keyrings. The quality of a keyring is affected by your roll over success. For example, with a few dozen ranks in this skill, a low roll may yield a "somewhat large" keyring, a middling roll may yield a "large" keyring, and a high roll may yield a "very large" keyring.
Keyrings can be made of the following material:
| Metals | Tin | Copper | Brass | Bronze | Iron | Silver | Gold |
|---|
Below is the list of keyring sizes that can be created.
| Keyring Size | Keyring Quality | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| a somewhat tiny <metal> keyring | Poor | 6 |
| a somewhat tiny <metal> keyring | Slightly Below-Average | 6 |
| a somewhat tiny <metal> keyring | Average | 7 |
| a small <metal> keyring | Average | 9 |
| a small <metal> keyring | Good | 10 - 11 |
| a somewhat small <metal> keyring | Good | ? |
| a somewhat large <metal> keyring | Excellent | 12 |
| a large <metal> keyring | Excellent | 13 - 14 |
| a very large <metal> keyring | Excellent | ? |
| ??? | Excellent | ? |
