Mining

Mining is currently available in three locations. It does not require a skillset to be used. You must have a chisel hammer or pick axe wielded and you must be in one of these three locations to start mining. Usage: mine here

The materials that can be mined currently have no use as there is no forging skillset. They can only be sold for very little coin or can be turned in for reputation in Seld (iron-rich ore).

"It now works on a progress basis instead of a pass/fail basis. (Even failure grants a little mining progress.)"

Metal affinity helps the mining progress. Weapon quality might? Mining tools no longer break or become damaged. Strength plays a role in how easy it is to mine. 200 strength and average quality pick = 54 success.

Tools:

"Chisel hammers increase the gem-finding progress and the general 'get something' progress while pick axes give more overall progress, but don't move the meter on gem-finding much."

Chisel hammers: Can be used as a one-handed crushing weapon.

Pick axes: You see a crude tool that a workman swings to break apart soil or objects. The worn tin head of the pick bears a curving point for breaking objects while the opposite side bears a flat tapered scooping implement. Can be used as a two-handed axe weapon.
