Learning a language
Welcome to the Crossroads of Cultures
The Great Library of Iridine stands as a beacon of knowledge and a bridge between cultures. Here, adventurers, priests and scholars alike gather to learn the tongues of Midlight, and store works of literature, art, and music. Your journey to becoming a polyglot starts with a single step: a step towards the library's welcoming doors.
Navigating to the Great Library
Venturing into the realm of languages is as simple as using your feet! Begin your linguistic journey with the command WALK TO LIBRARY. As you approach, let the majestic architecture of the library inspire you with the rich history of and diversity of Iridine it houses within its walls. All of the languages of Midlight can be learned at the library, free of charge.
Preparing for Your Visit
In respect of the library's tradition of scholarship and peace, all weapons must be left at the entrance. Fear not, for the guardians of knowledge - the library guards - will safeguard your armaments. Simply use OFFER <weapon> to GUARD, and embark on your intellectual quest unburdened. Upon your return, a polite SAY TO GUARD Return my things will reunite you with your belongings, along with a complimentary sack for convenience, should you have multiple items.
Inside the Library
Upon entering, the air fills with the scent of vellum, parchment, and the silent whispers of knowledge passed through ages. A guard will ensure you've adhered to the library's protocol by gently ensuring no weapons have been brought inside. Then, you are free to explore.
The grand foyer of the library is where your journey truly begins. Approach the desk as you enter with APPROACH DESK, where the attendant awaits. SAY TO ATTENDANT LEARN LANGUAGES. He will share a bit about each nation's culture and the tongues they speak, igniting your curiosity and thirst for learning.
Choosing Your Path
Express your interest in a specific language, for instance, SAY TO ATTENDANT LEARN IRIDINIAN and the attendant will offer a glimpse into the culture and history of your chosen nation. A simple yes or no (Y/N) command will seal your commitment to learning. Upon agreement, you'll be guided down the marble halls to a tutor dedicated to your chosen language.
Engaging with the Tutor
Once in the presence of your tutor, the language lessons will commence. You'll be greeted in the native tongue, and your task is to mimic - to ECHO the greeting, acknowledging the tutor's gender with ECHO man or ECHO woman. These lessons can be completed daily, and are available once every real-life day, resetting at midnight server time. Each successful echo will give you skill points (SP) in the respectively language. Once you've reach 1 full language point you'll gain a rank in the respective language.
Immersing Yourself
Each lesson is a step closer to fluency, and with each word learned, you'll find the world of Midlight opening up in new and exciting ways. Engage with the local inhabitants, and forge deeper connections with the diverse cultures that enrich The Eternal City. Once you've reached 50 lessons in a language, you will be considered 'fluent'. You can use the SPEAK <language> command to speak in that language. Note that anyone with at least some knowledge of that language will be able to understand you but only those who are fluent will be able to see your speech in it's entirety.
Leaving early
Should you need to leave the tutor before you finish your lessons SAY TO <TUTOR> I would like to leave.
