Tailoring

Skill Overview

While many in the world arm themselves with spear and shield, the tailor prefers as his weapons, the needle and thread. With it he attacks the wear and tear that plagues Iridine's clothing. Of course most tailor can easily advance beyond this, leaving such mending to apprentices, and begin to craft clothing for others to buy and wear. A truly gifted tailor can look forward to being hired exclusively as a house tailor for a patrician or his wife, and can watch as his creations are worn to parties of the rich and famous.

Tailoring is mainly focused on sewing and clothes-making activities, as well as various cloth items such as dolls and bedding. Materials include all types of cloth and soft leathers, threads and yarns, and cloth accessories for beginners, such as beads, buttons, fringes, fur, etc.

The art of tailoring has been around since ancient times, when the primitive peoples of Midlight began to cover themselves with skins and furs and gather into small communities. The craft has evolved in recent generations with the development of the loom and working of wool and cotton. A great variety of clothes can be made by anybody with some basic tailoring knowledge.

Much of this page is created from or inspired by Nyhpistra's Monster Catalogus.

For guidance on using the skill set, see the Tailoring Guide(in progress).

Notes on Learning

  • You cannot train 'Basic Tailoring'. Your basic tailoring rank increases as you train the tailoring sub-skills.
  • To view and learn related lores from trainers, use the learn lore and the learn lore from <trainer> commands.
  • Tailoring requires the knowledge of specific lores & recipes. Once these lores are known, you do not need to learn additional ranks.
  • Tailors can optionally use the knot & refit commands, which requires no skill to learn or use.
  • Custom Tailoring Lores (Edgings/Patterns) can be requested via RP Purchases.
  • You can unlearn recipes, you cannot unlearn lores.
  • For a list of available fabrics for each recipe see the Tailoring Guide Fabric Chart.

#Fabric Chart

This section will soon be moved to the tailoring guide page.

The below chart columns reference the base materials, but includes all variants of that type of fabric.

  • Wool also includes: fine wool, homespun wool, rough wool & tightly woven wool.
  • Linen also includes: fine linen & poorly-woven linen.
  • Cotton also includes: rough cotton & cotton brocade.
  • Silk also includes: silk brocade.
  • Velvet also includes: silk velvet.

To find where the appropriate fabric is sold, you can search for 'length of cloth' in the shops list.

Related Commands

Related commands are commands that require no skill or training to use, but are necessary as part of the Tailoring skill set.

#Recall recall <lore>

To stitch a pattern or sew a patch, you first need to recall <lore> before working on your garment. You can type lore by itself to see a list of your known lores and view the full list of all available tailoring lores.

Maker's mark is a special lore, in that it allows someone to identify the maker of an item by inspecting it.

Each asterisk (*) in the recall gives you an idea of how many attempts you'll need to complete your item. Example: Maker's Mark requires only 1 stitch, while zigzag edging will require 9 stitches.

When you see this in use you see:

> recall maker's mark
The maker's mark allows someone to identify the maker of an item by inspecting it.
To add a maker's mark:
* Stitch your Maker's Mark onto the garment.

> recall zigzag edging stitch
* Begin stitching a zigzag line onto the edge of the garment.
* Continue stitching a zigzag onto the edge of the garment.
* Continue stitching a zigzag onto the edge of the garment.
* Continue stitching a zigzag onto the edge of the garment.
* Continue stitching a zigzag onto the edge of the garment.
* Continue stitching a zigzag onto the edge of the garment.
* Continue stitching a zigzag onto the edge of the garment.
* Continue stitching a zigzag onto the edge of the garment.
* Finish stitching the zigzag onto the edge of the garment.

#Threading thread <needle> with <thread>

Before performing actions such as stitching, your needle must be threaded. Your needle must be re-threaded, if ever you get to the end of your spool of thread.

When you see this in use you see:

> thread need with my thread
You thread a silver sewing needle with a spiraled grip carefully with a spool of undyed homespun wool thread.

#Knot knot <spool> with <spool>

What is a tailor to do with the remnants of their spools of thread? Combine them with other remnants using the knot command. No skill is necessary.

When you see this in use you see:

> knot spool with 2 spool
You knot a spool of undyed homespun wool thread carefully with a spool of undyed homespun wool thread.

#Refit refit <garment>

Once a tailor has completed the garment, it can be altered slightly through the refit menu. No skill training is required beyond a basic knowledge of Tailoring. Simply REFIT <garment> and you will be shown a menu listing the ways in which you can modify the garment. As you improve in tailoring skill, more adjectives will become available. These adjectives are listed in the table below. It may be incomplete.
